Hi Kate! Welcome back to Ukraine forum :)
Banya in July? Hmm.. Last summer was so terribly hot here that you didn’t even need to pay for a sauna - it was ready outside any time and for free! :)
Hope Lvivtravel could recommend something in downtown Lviv, but a while ago we stayed in Galaktika - a hotel and entertainment complex near Lviv, in about 10-15 minutes by a mini-bus. And we really loved their healthcare facilities - they have both sauna and banya galaktika-club.com/en/… (also mentioned it in my #1 here tripadvisor.com/…30581821 )
As for Kyiv, since some friends of mine built own facilities I stopped using «commercial» banya’s, so can't share any recent personal experience, I'm afraid.
But you might want to check out the following «Russian-type» banya’s (use google translate, please):
http://www.bantu10.kiev.ua/ (centrally located hence the most expensive).
If you wish to combine banya experience with a relaxing day outside the city, you might want to go to Vyshgorod in less than 20km from downtown Kyiv, and visit «Bannyj Dvir» («Sauna Courtyard») there http://www.par2.net.ua/ or to Obukhiv in less than 40km from downtown Kyiv, to «Yaryna» hotel complex with Russian banya http://www.yaryna.com.ua/news.htm
In any case, you will have to arrange banya in advance, so ask your hotel to assist you with «booking». Perhaps they will have some recommendations, too.
Wow! Thanks for all that information. Though as you say maybe July is not the BEST time for a banya - we shall see :-)
Well - of the water sports in Lviv - may recommend you swimming pools, aquapark or lakes around city... :)
About authenticity - "banya" is rather russian invention - so most authentic ones may be found probably in more north-eastern direction... :)
In Lviv - spotted advertising of "Authentic russian banya" at Bukhta Vikingiv (Viking Bay) summer entertainment resort - about 15km SE from Lviv along H09 highway to Ivano-Frankivsk - at village Vidnyky.
Kate, not that I explicitly said banya is no good for summer; in fact it might even help to endure the «natural» heat easier.
But I personally enjoy banya in late autumn and winter the most :)
