Krka Nat'l Park vs. Plitvice Lakes Nat'l Park

Hello All,

We are traveling to Croatia for the first week in October (9 night trip). We have an aggressive schedule but not sure how aggressive as viewing some sights might move faster and/or slower (as you never know with traveling until you go). We are now trying to determine what we might miss and what we should not miss.

For anyone who has gone to both Krka Nat'l Park and Plitvice Lakes Nat'l Park, would we find by visiting Krak Nat'l Park that we experienced a 'small' portion of Plitvice Lakes Park?? It's a considerable journey and time in our short trip to go to Plitvice Lakes Park but we will do so if we get feedback that we'd really have missed something. From what we've read thus far, it seems though that Krka Nat'l Park might give us a flavor of it.

Appreciate any details, opinions, thoughts on this.

Not sure this will fully answer you, but here goes. We were on a tour, some opted for Plitvice and we opted for Krka. Krka was pretty, some great waterfalls, gentle walks, we enjoyed it, but were not overwhelmed. Others went to Plitvice. They came back exhausted. Some spectacular rushing water, they said, but most of the time they spent looking down at the trail trying not to lose their footing and fall into the rushing streams.

Krka was easy to get to, Plitvice more time-consuming (and time-consuming to go through). Perhaps it depends on the balance of your trip and how much time you're alloting to other things. Either one is a welcome break in the unspoiled countryside.

Thanks, cbchrc!

It's a difficult question to ask as I have no doubt that Plitvice Lakes Nat'l Park is beautiful. It's just trying to balance time and opportunities. We were hopeing that we would get to see a 'smaller version' of that park via Krka. We're active and have hiked many areas but 'hiking' isn't our objective for this trip, this time. Not sure yet if Krka has the same geological formations, though both have waterfalls, but we believe it will provide us with another pleasant and different experience during our journey. Next time we'll catch Plitvice Lakes ;0).

Thanks again - - your input has really helped us.

Krka national park covers a very large area and if you are only looking for waterfalls, Skradinski buk (near Skradin) is a place to go. If coming by car and have an entire day, you should visit Manojlovac waterfalls (second highest waterfall in Croatia, GREAT view from the opposite cliff!!!)close to Knin (an ancient Roman arena has been recently dug out there!) or go to Roški slap area.

Visovac monastery is a very nice place on a small river island.

Plitvice are great but to "turisty" in my opinion.
