Tons of posts on this, so do spend some time and look them up. Having made a decision to stay here, www.visitsplit.com is the local official tourist board site with lots of info; the place to start. The Split Forum page has all sorts of info on day trips and shopping--as the key ferry port in the region, day trips to most of the islands are easy. Within 1.5 hours are Klis Fortress, Omis, Krka National Park, Sibenik, Trogir and other very worthwhile places, all of which can be googled after looking at the map and seeing what;s down or up the coast. As far as booking trips, most of the agencies all offer the same trips. And the prices are very similar too. There are agencies in the Palace, around the Palace and of course on line. The tourist office has a great rack of tours in their office on the waterfront Riva as well as in the Peristil. We have sent friends to Portal, secretdalamtia.com with excellent results, but these are only two of many.

I would also recommend you take a day trip to Kastela. Kastela is made up of 7 pearl villages and is located in between Trogir and Split. There are 15th Century castles and ancient churches and you can walk along the coastal road through each of the Kastela villages by foot. There are also many relaxing bars that serve coffee or alcohol with views of the sea along with places to eat. The area is also not completely packed out with tourists.

You can catch Bus 37 from Split to Kastela. This bus also continues to Trogir another town that is worth visiting. From Trogir you can also take Boat Trips for the day that often include a fish picnic.

Sibenik is well worth a visit, it has far fewer tourists than in Trogir and Split Old Town and its being on a hill gives great views..

Not sure about public tranport options though I'm afraid (we had a car)
