Get out of Guatemala City and up to Antigua ASAP. From there you can make easy day trips by minibus throughout the highlands. If this will be your only trip to the country, you *really* ought to make it up to Tikal. Thee's no other place on earth like it. Any of the hotels and travel agents in Antigua can arrange for airfare & reservations. It will probably be a 2 or 3 day detour, but it's worth it.

Antigua is a hot destination for New Year, as well as Panajachel, so you better check for reservation at this places, as well as Flores.

on the other hand You can stay in Guatemala City ( 45 min to Antigua, 2.30 Hrs to Panajachel, 1 hour to Pacific Coast and 3 Hours to Retalhuleu and Caribean Coast, driving, a little more by bus.
