It happens everyday, but there are some days that are bigger than others. Perhaps one of our Antigua residents can answer in more detail. The market is HUGE and takes a while to walk through it on any day. I actually prefer the "off days" as my favorite vendors are there everyday and it is less crowded. Enjoy.

Market days are Monday, Thursday and Saturday but most inside stalls are open everyday.

The Antigua market is not one of the best. Not traditional. Good place to buy DVDs. One potentially neat feature if you are into dumpster diving. When places like Goodwill in the US have clothing they can't sell in their stores they sell it off in huge bundles. Gets shipped to Guat and other countries where it is sold at a dollar or two a piece. Since most Guat women are tiny..at least in height... larger sizes don't get sold. A gringa friend of mine who lives near Antigua hits up the bins. She is a larger size. One of her treasures is a beautiful designer jacket that back home would have been a few hundred. She got it for a dollar.

There are two markets in Antigua Guatemala; they are right next door to one another. The larger one is the general market, which is open every day of the week from 7:00am to 7:00pm. The main market days are Monday, Thursday, and Saturday; the most important market day is Saturday when the fruit and vegetables are at their freshest. Vendors come in to town from rural areas close to Antigua, bringing everything from exotic fruits to beautiful flowers and live chickens. The market is large, and after 11am it can be quite difficult to get around easily. It is best to arrive early, around 7:30am if you want to get the best of what is available. In Guatemala it is customary to bargain for market goods; if the vendor says "20 quetzales" then you can offer "15 quetzales" and go on until you meet in the middle somewhere and agree a price. It is a game...have fun! With a big smile and some patience, everyone wins! The other market is the artisans market where you can find an abundance of indigenous craft work. This market is a riot of color, and if you are looking for gifts or souvenirs then this is this is the market for you!

The handicrafts market is a good spot to see what is available. But if you are going to Panajachel the prices there are substancially lower and the selection is broader. Happy trailmix. Beware of touts with links.
