The fountain in Central Plaza, Antigua

I notice that a couple of posts reviewing the Central Plaza say that the fountain is a mermaid one. There are four women at the base of the fountain each with their hands cupping their breasts. The water used to emerge from their breasts but now cascades down from above. Apart from being topless, these statues do not resemble mermaids. We were told they were native women who were killed by the Spanish for not breastfeeding their babies, or because their babies died? I would love to hear the real story behind the fountain.
