4 day stay - Bring car on ferry or Leave it?

My wife and I will be there in late June. We'll be driving to MA. Should we bring the car over on the ferry to use on island or is it best to park it at the ferry lot and use foot and local transport on island?

Our B&B in Oak Bluffs says they have parking available on the street.

Thanks so much!

Are you willing pay the ferry costs for the car for your 4 day stay?

Alanm, yes if that's the best scenario. Looks like $135 to bring car on Steamship Authority ferry .vs. $100 to park at Island Queen and ride 2 passengers.

We still will have to get luggage from ferry dock to the B&B.

That ferry fare is a lot less than I thought. In my opinion, for a four-day stay, yes, you should certainly take your car.

If you can get car reservations, yes it would be worth it to have your car on the Vineyard. Though there is good public transportation among the 3 main towns, it is more difficult to get out to Menemsha & Aquinnah without a car (places you definitely want to visit!)

Yes, it might depend upon whether you can even get a reservation that works for you. We reserved in February for July and did not even get times we liked at all. It seems very competitive this year! Call the Steamship Authority and see what they can realistically do for you.

Good advice above: Bring the car. Reserve as early as possible. You will be able to explore the island and see so much more with the car. Visit the Steamship Authority website at http://www.islandferry.com and click on the tab 'Vehicle Space Availability' in the Martha's Vineyard pull down tab. Search the date for a scheduled run with open car space. If you don't see the time you want, reserve space for later than your desired time. It is much easier to move to an earlier time and not risk missing a ferry. Keep in mind that as the date nears, space does become available. Car space is set aside for preferred clients, regular transports and emergencies. As the date nears, and these are not used, space opens. You can continue to phone the reservation office and ask to change your time. Make sure to 'Waitlist' for your preferred time when scheduling your reservation.

Having your car opens up the entire island to you, and there is so much to see. Besides Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and Vineyard Haven, you will be able to visit Alley's General Store in West Tisbury and pick up a sandwich at 7a, watch the sunset at Menemsha Beach and grab some Larsens for dinner, look out over the cliffs at Gay Head, etc. etc. etc.

Thank you, everyone. I have made reservations with Steamship Authority. Total for round trip one vehicle and two adults is $167. And thank you all for the tips on where to visit with the car.
