Travel to Nantucket with infants

Good afternoon! We are two families traveling to Nantucket with little ones over the 4th of July week. Renting a 7 passenger SUV seems like overkill, especially when the island is so small.

Can anyone comment on public transportation with little ones? Are the Wave shuttles very crowded or do they take a long time to ride (many stops) so that traveling w/ children becomes cumbersome?

We got around the island for years with small children without renting a vehicle. You'll need a small collapsible umbrella stroller for riding the buses. It's not the most convenient thing, but doable. When our family group expanded to multiple grandchildren, we did rent a minivan, which was much more pleasant but also very expensive.
