Is Skopje for us?

Hi all,

We a group of 4 English guys in our early 40's who travel together a lot.

We have been all over Europe & parts of the Middle East and enjoy experiencing different cultures.

We are thinking about visiting Skopje next year for a few days and, if possible, would like to ask a few questions before booking:

1. Beer / food - From what we have read we believe we can get a beer in a regular bar for around 100MKD and a meal out in an average restuarant for around 750MKD. Is this about right or have we got it wrong?

2. Where to stay - We like to stay centrally to any nightlife. Is there a central area to Skopje with bars, restuarants etc we should stay, or is the nightlife spread throughout the town?

Thanks for any replies, we are looking to book flights within the next week for June next year.

1. Re: Is Skopje for us?

Hello from Skopje - Macedonia.

For your first question - the answer is YES - YES;

You can get a beer in a regular bar for around 100MKD

and a meal out in an average restuarant for around 750-850MKD.

For your second question: Hotels in the central area are much more expensive (as always). There are nice hotels which are not in central area, but still useful for your purpose (nightlife).

Because you would like to come in June - also I would like to recommend you to visit city of Ohrid (~ 2 hours away from Skopje), and to get lunch at the most unique place: springs of Ohrid lake. Please see this short video and you will get the point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze4OOKn6Al4

The location is "St. Naum" - Ljubanishta - Springs of Ohrid lake.

I would like to wish you a nice stay in Macedonia and have a excellent fun here.

So, finally, answer of your question "Is Skopje for us" - the answer is very simple: YES ! ! !

Yes, Macedonia is by English standards very cheap. You are looking at 2 course meal around £10 and pint will be around £1,50

More info on Macedonia can be found on the Tourist info website http://travel2macedonia.com.mk/

Ohrid is about 200km away or about 3 hrs on a bus thought amazing landscape. Macedonia is very mountainous so it is great bus ride.

You can get to Ohrid if that's indeed what you want to ad to your trip, but take the bus ride via Tetovo and Debar, opposite via Kichevo. That way you are travelling via Drimkol area of W Macedonia and following the gorge of Radika river.

Ohrid is UNESCO WHS.

Skopje has great night life, but so Bitola and Ohrid. For good affordable accommodation look on T2M website for list of hotels, average B&B for double room will be between £32-55.

Macedonia has caffe culture and Skopje is full of nice bistro type of caffes dotted around the banks of river Vardar, Macedonia Street ( centre) also there is lots to see and do I and around the city.

June is good month to visit, as is not too hot. Summers in Macedonia are known to go high , in low 40c.

Macedonians go out nearly every evening, so it will be always full of ppl enjoying Zlaten Dab or Skopsko beer. Also we like to go out late, usually the bars are empty before at least 20:30 and goes till 2am and in some cases ( nightclubs) till 5 am...just to prepare you what to expect!

Macedonian denar is closed currency so you can't order it from TESCO or the post office, best is to get it from the ATM.

There is Halk Bank ATM on the left hand side at the exit of Alexandar the Great Airport where you can withdraw money.

€1=61.3 and £1=70.2 MKD denars, there is no extra conversion charge only your bank usual charges.

Best travel money card from UK is Nationwide cash card/electron, as you don't pay conversion charges only standard £1,50 to take the money in foreign country.

Hello,

I hardly have anything to add after the excellent answers above.

If you still have some energy after all the food and beers, you could do the recently published self-guided Skopje City Walk...You can download the printable PDF version for onyl 2.25 euro, but it is also available in Skopje on paper for the price of just two beers (200 Denar), see hikingmacedonia.wordpress.com/citywalk/

If you are interested in culture, the Bradt Guide Macedonia comes in handy. It also lists hotels, restaurants etc etc...

For more info about Skopje and Macedonia, please have a look at my reviews here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/pijlmans

Cheers,

Dennis

6. Re: Is Skopje for us?

Thanks again Sasho,

We will plan to visit Ohrid. Is it easy enough to visit Albania while we are there?

The cross looks amazing, we are sure to take the cable car to the top.

We knew about mother Terassa.

Can you recommend any bars for us?

We are looking for local bars where we can mix with local people and enjoy the culture, not bars with young people, but bars for odler people (30's & 40's).

We also enjoy bars with live music (local bands)

And finally disco's playing 70's / 80's / 90's music again for people in 30's and 40's

Thanks again

you have been really helpful, we are very much looking forward to our trip to your Country :-)

At Matka take boat ride and visit the deepest underwater Cave in Europe and oe of the deepest in the world.

Lovely 2 hrs Exkursion , Price €10 pp with guide. Goes in front of the St Andrew monastery.
