Swimming, boating in Annapolis

We will be in Annapolis/Baltimore area in mid-August. Are there any beach, lake, bay areas good for swimming? Also would appreciate any info on boat and bicycle rentals. Thanks

not much swimming in Baltimore. There is great bike trail in Balt county - 20 minutes north of baltimore (hardpack stone) with bike rentals as well as a trail between balt and annapolis (paved). there are a number of bike rental places depending on where you go.

Balt city has a trail also that is interesting called Gwynns Falls. Everything from packed to paved. thru woods and neighborhoods and along water. It is urban and gritty in places but a neat ride.

too many options as you can rent on trail or off. google bike rentals baltimore. I can't say that one is better than other and you will need to call if you have any questions.

Swimming- Sandy Point which is just outside of Annapolis on the Chesapeake. Don't expect to find beaches like along the atlantic.

don't know anything about boat rentals (depends on what you are looking for) but I am guessing you can google that info.

This should help in your search for getting out on the water in regards to boat rentals. You may consider staying at a hotel with a pool as swimming in the Bay or its tributaries in mid-August will be difficult due to the number of stinging jelly fish that are predicted this year.

Another nice park with trails very close to historic Annapolis is Quiet Waters. The link above will have much information, not just about boating in the area but about hotels, restaurants, shopping, bike rentals and other activities including sightseeing.

6tareg is right on about swimming in the bay in August. The sea nettles like high salinity and with our drought, a bumper crop of nettles is predicted this year. That said, if you go north in the bay, the salinity declines, and many northern tributaries don't see sea nettles. The Hammerman area of Gunpowder State Park has a swimming beach, as well as kayak and windsurfer rentals, and I think it would be largely nettle free, but no guarantees! Other than that, as 6tareg points out, your best bet is Sandy Point, which rents power boats, and Quiet Waters, which has kayak rentals.
