PTY to Albrook with Miraflores stop

Hello,

We arrive at 8:15am on a Saturday morning. Leave Albrook for Bocas at 4pm the same afternoon. What is the best way to accomplish this transfer with luggage and a Miraflores tour while we wait? We will be a party of 4 with luggage. Regular taxi or prearrange shuttle/guide? How about total cost??

Thanks for any help. Arriving next week!!!!

To me you are talking about hiring a driver/guide for the day so that you are sure you will make it to the airport in time for your flight.

Contact jose@goldenfrog.net to get a price on an airport pickup and a tour of the locks and whatever else you will want to do.

And remember to pack light so that Air Panama doesn't get to charge you for overweight luggage!

Thanks for your suggestion. I have sent him a message. Do you know the weight restriction on Air Panama?

Last time we flew it was 35pounds. They charge .80 cents a pound over that so if you are hitting the 50 pounds allowed by the major carriers you will pay on Air Panama. Besides, it's Panama, keep it light, bathing suits don't weigh much and if you are bringing hiking boots wear them on the plane. Have fun.

For weight restrictions, check the Air Panama website. They change periodically. I believe checked baggage is 35 lbs, except for sports equipment, such as scuba and surfboards. Fortunately, the overweight costs are cheap, compared to US carriers. There are also weight and size restrictions on carry-on items, too.

The transportation issue isn't one of making it to the airport on time. Albrook is within five minutes of Miraflores. It's like going from Delta Park to PDX. The issue is what to do with your baggage while you're at the Miraflores visitors' center. That's where a private driver might help.

Let me throw out a couple of other options for consideration: You could take a taxi from Tocumen to Miraflores and store your baggage at the information desk. The taxi fee from Tocumen to Miraflores should be about $35-$40. There are always plenty of taxis at both Miraflores and Albrook. From Miraflores to Albrook (or vice versa) you'll probably get hit with a "gringo" fare of $10. The actual fare should be about $2.25. To get a more reasonable fare, you could walk from the visitor's center to the road and get a taxi there. But, that's a long walk in a heat you're not used to, coming from Portland. At Albrook, you can walk across the street, to the intersection and catch a cab there for a lot less than the bandits will quote you at the airport. In Panama, always ask for the fare before you get into the taxi.

Another option would be to go to Albrook first and check your luggage through to Bocas. Then, get a taxi to Miraflores. The taxi fare from Tocumen should be $35 including tolls.

The visitor's center will hold your interest for a couple of hours. After that, you might consider getting a taxi to Casco Viejo for lunch before heading back to Albrook.
