a few questions for upcoming trip

I was wondering if I could get some recommendations for our upcoming trip.

1. Do taxis charge more for extra people? We'll be 4 travelling together from the airport, and in town.

2. I'm trying to figure out what area to stay in. Do you have any areas of town that are your faves? I was thinking casco viejo for ambiance, but is it safe to walk around in after dark?

3. We have a cigar lover in our group and was wondering where in PC we can purchase some.

From the airport it should be a flat rate, no matter how many. You will need a van, but there are lots of them available. In town, the rates are more variable.

Personally I like El Cangrejo for the wide range of restaurants, and the relatively easy access. But there is not a lot to actually see round there. stxSteve is an expert on Casco Viejo and will no doubt comment.

We loved Casco Viejo, and having seen the other options would not recomend anywhere else unless you want to stay in a city that could just as well be Toronto. We spent 5 nights there and walked everywhere with 2 kids in tow. That would not have happend if I did not feel safe.

Casco Viejo = Unique. The rest of the City = big city anywhere in the world. The previous comment about kids and feeling safe in Casco should be all you need reference your safety concerns. Good restaurants, nice plazas for people watching, shopping and even cigars. OLNY down side is our current street project which makes walking around Casco more of a challenge.

Again, if you want something unique give Casco a try. If you like you travel experiences a little more toward the "vanilla" side, stick with the City.

Enjoy Panama

Thanks Steve. I'm definitely not a "vanilla" side person. Casco Viejo sounds great. Looking at places to stay and it doesn't look like there is too much to choose from there. Do you have any recommendations? Between $100 & $200 per night?

One other question, to go the domestic airport, how much time do you think we would need if getting a cab from casco viejo? It would be for a late afternoon flight.

Take a look at these lodging possibilities:

http://www.pattyscasitas.com/

http://www.casaantiguapanama.com/

http://casasucreboutiquehotel.com/index.html

http://www.tantalohotel.com/

The actual drive time (mid-afternoon, before rush hour) is about 20 minutes - $5 max. I would have the hotel (wherever you stay) arrange for transport, it will cost a little more - but you won't have the uncertainty of catching a cab on the street.

Hope you find something in Casco that works for your budget.
