Does anyone know if it is possible to buy antibiotics over the counter in Panama (as you can, for example, in Equador)?
Yes - in most pharmacies - no prescription is needed for most drugs

It is important to write down the name of the antibiotic you want to give to the pharmacist. If they don't have that specific one, say (pronounced)
"Sim-a-Lar?" (similar). Drugs here may not have the same name as in the states.
