10 hour layover

Hello. I am going to Argentina and have a ten hour layover in Panama City. So, three friends and I will venture out into the city for most of that time. Any suggestions on what to do or what to see? I know 10 hours is not much but that's all we have and the flight was a good price so we took it.

I was thinking maybe go to the city center and eat somewhere or perhaps near the water (PC is on the water, right?). So:

which taxi/transport company is good to take from the airport and which area do we go to?

what is a good, reasonably priced restaurant?

what else would you recommend for a short city jaunt?

Thank you! :)

Hello, Joi. I will be arriving in PC at 11am and leaving at 9pm. That probably gives me about 6.5 hours once you factor in taxi to the terminal once the plane lands, customs and trip to/from the city and airport. We'd probably definitely want to eat in the city or by the water, wherever it is nice, people-watch and maybe check out the beach. This will be in June so I'm sure that it will be blistering hot there at that time of year, right?

Taxi service from the airport and in fact from anywhere seems pretty disorganized. Basically, you should be OK with whoever's there.

You can get into and out of the center of Panama City by paying the taxi to use the (expensive) toll roads. The free highway is chaos.

Copa Airlines evidently runs a shuttle bus to the nearby shopping center.

Via Espana in the vicinity of El Panama Hotel has plenty of restaurants. You might check with Madame Chang's, which is near the nearby Marriott hotel and casino. The restaurant is lovely, food superb, and prices modest.

If you don't want to take a tour (Turista Internacional runs layover city tours) then grab a cab to the Amador Causeway - heaps of options for lunch overlooking the bay or the canal entrance... Then grab another taxi to Casco Viejo in the city - visit the Canal Museum (closed Mondays), National Theater, Church with the Golden Altar etc...

If you bargained with the taxi you could get them by the hour - most go for $8 to $10 an hour... Then you wouldn't have to worry about getting a taxi each time - you could also run out to the Canal - Miraflores Locks Visitor's Center between the Causeway and Casco Viejo...

That would be a pretty full day...

Cheers,

Andrew
