Where to shop for souvenirs?

Hello,

The last time we were in Panama, we had the hardest time finding places to shop for souvenirs - nice souvenirs, like tshirts, magnets, typical stuff. We looked everywhere and the only nice ones we could find were at the hotel store. Even the airport had a very limited selection. Is there an area in/around PC to shop for souvenirs?

Thanks!

the albrook mall is huge and wonderful. there is also a store called the YMCA close to the mall that has like a farmer's market full of all kinds of gifts and souvenirs.

Thanks. So, the Albrook mall has souvenirs? We went to the mall but all we found were stores like you'd find in a mall here, granted, we did not walk around the whole mall.

Go to Flory Saltzman Mola shop. It is within the El Panama Hotel, Via Veneto complex. We found the most wonderful t-shirts with molas on them and not expensive. Other folkloric arts also there. Loved this place! Saw different shirts we loved (better than anyplace in Panama-and we did travel all over - we were there a month)!!! Check it out.

Also the Artisans (flea market) near Ancon Hill is great for local people's wares, shirts, etc.

I am not sure how to get there from town as we stayed at La Estancia B & B and we just walked down the stairs from the hill there to this market.

The person who mentioned Ancon Hill is correct. There is a large building which houses roughly 50 or more stalls of the type of gifts you are looking for. Don't forget to bargain a bit.

The name (forgive spelling) is the Mercado De Artesenia. Any cab will know it. It's just west of the city but east of the canal and only 1mile north of the bridge..2 miles north of the causeway. The section of the city is called Balboa.

Tourist buses stop there regularly thru the day, so there should be no fear of problems. The cab ride each way from downtown should not exceed $5 and well may be less. If your spanish is poor like mine....just tell the cabby Balboa? Mercado De Artesenia? 4 of 5 times you should get a nod....Paul.

Behind the anthropology museum on Plaza Cinco de Mayo, there's an artisans' market with very decent prices for souvenirs. It's right behind the "open-air mass barbershop".

There are also a few very nice stores in touristy parts of Casco Viejo but they have tourist prices (at least twice the market above). There are certain higher end souvenirs in these stores that you can't find in the market though.

Make sure to check out cocobolo statues (a type of rosewood), they're beautiful.

The best place is the old Balboa YMCA. There must be 50 vendors in there, with Molas, Tagua carvings, wood carvings, clothes, and hundreds of other souvenir itesm. I've been going to Panama for over 30 years, and this is probably the best place to find just about everything Panama has to offer. It's all in one place, too!
