Future of Nicaragua?

I had been reading with some interest about Nicaragua, not only as a family vacation destination, but potentially an investment location and retirement location.

Unfortunately, this last weekend I learned how close Nicaragua was becoming with Venezuala and that crazy man Chavez.

Is there any point to continuing to watch Nicaragua, or it going to slide into populist socialism with Venezuala?

If you are considering investing there, you might do some extensive reading about Nicaraguan politics and why the governments have been unstable except during dictatorship. You will then have much more insight into the mentality and mindset of Nicaraguan people. Several social and political accounts have been written explaining the phenomenon of the mentality.

One has to remember that Daniel Ortega won by only 38% of the vote. There was general consensus that if there was a runoff Ortega would lose. The opposition to the Sandinista Party - the Alianza Liberal Nicaraguense (ALN) and the Partido Liberal Constitutionalista (PLC) split the conservative vote and that permitted Ortega to win. Also, there is a break-off party of the Sandinistas that voted against Ortega, the Movimiento Renovador Sandinista (MRS). There was quite a bit of wait and see after the election, but there is continued investment, promises of economic growth through the private sector, and investment in tourism. The country has been on a growth cycle, and Ortega's actions to reduce this growth would be met with heavy political opposition. He is promising better health care and education, which the country needs. I think the cautious wait and see has changed to cautious optimism.
