Beaches - for swimming and sunbathing

Hello. We are thinking of taking a trip to Nicaragua around mid December - beginning of January.

My question is - in addition to sightseeing in Granada and to visiting Ometepe island, we would like to spend a week or so at the beach. We are not surfers but are looking for somewhere we could swim (with not too strong a tide) and sunbathe (are beach chairs available anywhere?). We hope not to be too isolated, with a choice of a few places to eat and drink etc.

I was thinking of San Juan de Sur, but understand it may be packed around Christmas/ New Year. Is that the case?

Or how about Playa Gigante? or maybe Las Penitas? Any advice would be appreciated.

The best place for swimming in Nicaragua is the Laguna de Apoyo they have the cleanest water of whole of central america...and swimming in a Crater Lake surrounded by jungle is a unique experience.... Accomodations

Posada de Abuela, The Villas as Apoyo , San SImian Lodge...

Regards

Greetings pier21:

I think Gigante might be a good option for you. It is semi-protected by the Pie de Gigante (Foot of the Giant) so the waves are not much a factor on the south end of the cove.

December-January is the low season as far as wave size goes anyway. The other beach you mentioned, Las Peñitas is a beach that is more open to the swells.

We visited Ometepe Island with our 3 children in March and we all loved the long stretch of clean sandy beach near Santa Cruz - it is on the lake so no problem for the kids with the salt water, plus the local kids are often on the beach playing or fishing also the farm animals come down and drink the clean water. It was warm and shallow near our beach guest house and so we could have our coffee and still watch the kids playing on the beach. Linda organized our beach sunset horseback rides and other tours - the kids are still talking about the pottery pieces, shells or interesting seeds they found on the beach plus all the coconuts we had from her gardens! We just revisited and stayed in the casita ......a romantic getaway!

Lucky to have such a gracious helpful hostess to make our anniversary special after all these years and 3 children too. There is alot to do here which we did with our family but this time we also hiked with Tony to the waterfall, took longer horseback rides and a couple sporting events! Our Spanish is improving and the islanders we met in March remembered us and welcomed us as friends...wondering where were the kids!

Really sweet helpful and hardworking islanders....a great experience and we are hoping to come back with the family next year!
