How safe is El Salvador for American Tourists?

I jumped on the opportunity to go down to ES with my girlfriend and her husband to visit El Salvador at the end of this month. Her dad lives in El Salvador and we would be staying with him at his ranch and he would be tour guide. She ensures me we will be super safe, stay in the touristy areas, and also have an amazing time!

However a couple days ago my mom calls crying her eyes out about how dangerous it is, the most dangerous city in the western hemisphere, considered the second most dangerous country, echoed by tons of articles on crime, kidnapping, AK47s and grenades!! (YIKES!!!!)

Ticket is already paid for- should I just eat the cost or get on the plane? Has anyone experienced any problems in ES, and is it worth the risk for an American female traveling with fluent Spanish speakers? Not gonna lie- a leeeeetle bit freaked out!

Yes it not fair to compare the raisins with watermelons although my post is a direct answer to the title of this thread "How safe is El Salvador for American Tourists?" Salvadorians tourists or Salvadorian people in general should ask (here on TA ) how safe it is to travel in the USA.

I have been invited to a wedding in El Salvador so I have been doing some checkups on the security situation.

I have compared murder rates ( …wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_int… ):

In the last year, per 100.000 people

Sweden 1.0

USA 4.8

El Salvador 69.2

It gives some perspective for those claiming the US has a lot of murders...

Statistically you have more chances being killed in a car accident than in an airplane crash. Yet billions of people get into a car every day.

Yes, and thus they subject themselves to a higher risk compared to flying.

So, your point is that you wont subject yourself to high risk of being murder in Salvador.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Have I said that I am not going (and if so, stated that it's because of the high murder rates) ?

Nope. I have just stated the murder rates / 100.000 people as a comparison.

Instead of basing my view on single events that has taken place, I believe it's more accurate to look at the crime statistics. That said, you should still apply a critic approach to how to interpret the statistics, but it still gives a better understanding of the situation compared to single events.

When I say a critic approach in this case, I mean that a closer study should still be made before drawing too many conclusions. For example, in the statistics provided, how many of the murders that were murders of tourists is not stated. It could be that fewer tourists per capita are murdered in El Salvador compared to in the US, but I find it unlikely considering the overall murder ratio.

In my opinion we have a lot of murders here in Sweden. The US has ~5 times as many per capita. I have still gone on holiday to the US 10 times in the past 15 years. El Salvador has ~70 times as many murders per capita compared to Sweden. I will not let that keep me from going, but I would take appropriate caution when I do go.

I totally agree. This is our second trip here in 2 months. We love it and have never felt unsafe. I'd say it was the opposite - there are tons of police and security everywhere. I've never seen so many police officers.

My wife is originally from El Salvador... and we have been going there since 2000...things are very different now.. No fear and you will enjoy travelling... We went by bus from El Salvador to Guatemala for two day trip...very cheap and enjoyed the well... then went three days trip last year to Nicragua...

My Wife's family were giving bad impression as they all were brain washed by American false media about Nicragua... The country is the most safest in Central America ..We travel many hours through out the country and enjoyed great pleasure with least amount of money... We will be there this month as fruit season and will drive all over other countries..GOOD THING IS THAT ..now with one stamp $10 at entry you can travel to all four countries with no extra travel money...just good for all four countries... Enjoy the Maya , fruit season and especially Holy Week this month.....I travelled the World almost each and every carrbean islands..love it...just explore the culture and traditions and away from false brain washing media from here...

I am a 74 year-old who has been addicted to traveling solo for 50 years. I have traveled in Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Belize, and Mexico. I stay in inexpensive places recommended by Lonely Planet or Rough Guide and travel mostly by bus.

My secret is to get out of the capital city (in this case, San Salvador) as quickly as possible - because all the poor souls displaced by war and injustice are clustered there, desperate. If you want to explore San Salvador, go with a local tour. Small towns away from the capital(try San Juan de las Flores in Chalatenango are charming and quite safe,) Take the same precautions you would in New York City.

I would probably not travel alone in a very poor country like Salvador if I didn't speak/read Spanish. I can ask locals for advice and read of any bus robberies etc. in the newspapers. If you don't speak the language, talk to foreigners who have lived there for a while, or backpackers(these are mostly Europeans, but they speak English) who have already been traveling there for a few weeks.
