Euro 2012 - From Lviv to Kharkiv

Hi all

We're a group of 4 guys going to watch Portugal at Euro2012.

We're staying in Rzeszow from 9th till 13th June. We'll be going from Lviv on the 13th direction Kharkiv to wathc the final match on the 18th.

Any suggestions fo this 4 days journey? Between Rivne, Zhytomyr, Kiev, Poltava and Kharkiv. which do you recommend?

Is it better to drive during day or night?

Then on the 18th we need to drive back to Kiev. Shall we drive during the night to catch an early flight in Kiev or is it better to sleep in Kharkiv and drive during the day?

Thanks in advance

About recommendations - would prefer Rivne over Zhytomyr, Kyiv is absolutely must-see, Poltava - also worth visiting. Other worth-seeing tourist towns - between Lviv and Rivne mainly - Olesko, Pidgirtsi, Brody, Dubno.

About driving - personally - I like driving at night here - because of easier highway traffic, - but on a bad less-known roads - it could be quite annoying - bacause of random holes/bumps, worn-out road markings and poor lighting. Highway Lviv-Kyiv is quite OK, - some parts still under construction/repair - but promised to be finished before June. Cannot say much about Kyiv-Kharkiv road - but seems to be a bit worse.

Hi RDCJ and welcome to Ukraine forum :)

Incidentally, within last few weeks I drove around nearly all the «Euro routs»: Kyiv - Donetsk - Lugansk - Kharkiv - Poltava - Kyiv. And then: Kyiv - Zhytomyr - Rivne - Lutsk - further to the border with Poland (no Lviv).

Sure, the roads condition today is (hopefully!!) not what it’s going to be in June. But right now I would not recommend anyone driving along it at night further than Zhytomyr, where the road is still under construction, and then from Kyiv to Kharkiv further than Lubny. And do not drive at night in Poltava unless you want to leave your car in Ukraine; the city is full of potholes.

Rivne-Zhytomyr leg is already excellent: https:/…5723810355016568034 Kyiv to Lubny is largely the same. And there are new lights mounted above the road on this short leg, and English signs.

Sadly, Lubny-Poltava-Kharkiv leg largely looks pretty much like this Donetsk-Kharkiv «highway», with lots of potholes: https:/…5714248714527426818

Fingers crossed they will accomplish major roadworks by Euro-2012, and all highways will be easily drivable. BUT. As soon as you leave E/M-type of roads, it’s often like driving right after the war.

As for the bases for the 4-days journey of yours, perhaps you’d better proceed in your planning from where you can get accommodation for your stopovers? Also, the choice of places to see on your way largely depends on your travel interests - what are they?

Rivne can be a good base for the things to see in the area, but other than that there’s not much to do there.

Please, take a look at this earlier thread: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g295377-i5799-k427… Lvivtravel and I offered great many suggestions on the things to see between Lviv and Kyiv there, as this area is truly reach in historic sights, particularly the castles.

Zhytomyr’s main sights can be seen in just a few hours tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g298050-i15834-k40… And there’s not much sense in staying there once you are so close to Kyiv.

Kyiv is certainly worthy at least a couple of days tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294474-i3663-k329…

Poltava is a nice quiet city, and one night there is quite enough to see its main sights and to ensure you an easy drive to Kharkiv. Check out my post #9 here for some suggestions on things to see in Poltava: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294473-i3662-k464… Also maybe this one will come handy tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294473-i3662-k455…

Between Kyiv and Poltava, the easiest places of interest to reach and see on your rout are (but again, depending on your interest):

Mgar Monastery www.mgarsky-monastery.org/gallery/photo.php

Myrhorod http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrhorod

Velyki Sorochyntsi en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velyki_Sorochyntsi

National Pottery Museum in Opishne http://opishne-museum.gov.ua/en

Dykan’ka http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dykanka

You could play Poltava by ear, either visit or skip, depending on how your trip goes and how fast you would want to reach Kharkiv.

Finally, Kharkiv is a big city, but also a very nice place, especially its old city centre, which can be seen by an easy walk within a day.
