Car rental safety

We are staying in Bucharest for 3 nights and are considering renting a car to explore the

surrounding area (Prahova Valley and Bran Castle). Is it safe to go off on our own?

Would this be less costly than some of the tour companies?

Renting a car and driving in Romania is reasonably safe; it's also generally cheaper than going with a tour.

As for the places you want to visit, keep in mind that traffic is heavy on weekends on the Prahova Valley and that you could also them easily/much cheaper by public transport.

Also, unless you've already booked accommodations, it would be best to split your time between Bucharest and Brasov (one night in Bucharest, two nights in Brasov) - this would make visiting the areas you want to see much simpler.

Driving around in Romania is very safe. You just have to be very careful, the roads are quite busy, and not just cars. Horse drawn buggies, pedestrians, bicycles, animals... I'm a travel guide myself and I drive this stretch often with my clients.... they always say "I'm glad I'm not driving"

There is no Express highway all the way to Prahoa Valley. So you'll have some mountain roads. Avoid weekends, the road from Bucharest to Sinaia - Bran gets very very very crowded.

So eyes wide open and you'll have a safe trip.

Rent from a reputable company. It is very safe , crime wise, in Romania the only issue is the roads and driving on them. Plenty of lunatics driving to fast. Try and drive during the day avoid the nights. Work on 60 km per hour travel distance. The roads can be faster but on average if you drive safely and to the limits it is around this

It is a wonderful country get out and see it. I agree traffic out of the city at weekends can be very bad .

Thank you for your reply. You mentioned you are a guide. We will be in Bucharest June 23/24/25 and

would like to take a couple of day trips. What would you charge to be our guide for a couple of excursions?

I've been reading some sightseeing suggestions (Bran and Peles Castel, Rasnov, Sinaia, Prahova Valley.)

or if you would have other suggestions that would be great.

We are 4 adults, seniors, but no limitations.

Thank you
