Apartment in Bucharest

Hello,

I'm arriving in Bucharest on September 1st and will be staying a few days with two American friends. I've been on a few sites that advertise "luxury" apartments for around 50 euros. The price is fine, but I don't want to be disappointed with regards to the location/cleanliness, etc, so am a bit hesitant to book in advance, but must. Has anyone had any positive experiences or leads to share ?

Best,

john

john, I live in Bucharest, so I can't really give you advice on hotels, cuz I never stayed in one. However, WHERE that apartment is located is critical in Bucharest. Allthough I don't know what you preffer (quiet, nature, nightlife, etc.) I will list some parts of Bucharest that would be nice, with some specifics as to what you can expect:

1. Piata (square in Romanian) Romana - center, nightlife, noisy

2. Piata Universitatii - center, nightlife, noisy

3. Piata Aviotorilor / Kiseleff street / Primaverii region / Piata Viscoriei - lots of parks, quiet, may be more expensive than the first 2

4. Dacia street, Dorobanti region - balanced and OK in every respect

Al all costs avoid:

1. Piata Unirii, Piata Alba Iulia, the Unirii region alltogether (new center) - No parks, no trees, it's noisy, expensive and ugly

2. Cotroceni region - too far from anything

50 EUR for an apartment for 3 persons sounds reasonable, especially if it is located in one of those areas that I mentioned. As for "luxury", it may be a bit down to luck. Write me the name of the website where you found the apatments, I'll have a look to, and I may be able to give you some advice, living here I have an "eye" for these things, I don't necessarily have to see it with my own eyes. Also, if you want, tell me what you would like to do in Bucharest, so I can direct you to some places.

Peace

Dixxjam,

Thanks for your help. I'm looking at an apartment from this site:

http://www.inapartment.ro

What do you think ? Of the apartments show, which location is the best ? Yes, we're interested in experiencing the nightlife, but want to avoid the big, nondescript apartment blocks at all cost.

Again, thanks so much for your help.

Best,

john

Dixxjam,

Mihnea Baldea sent me an email and used you as a reference, so I just wanted to confirm that. If that's the case, then thank you for your help. It's much appreciated.

My friends and I are hoping to experience the Romania's rural life and mountains without travelling across the country. We'd like to hike or bike, any advice would be appreciated. Again, thanks for your help thus far.

Mihnea Baldea is a collegue of mine from work and a good friend and I told him about you guys. It also happens that he will not be busy in that period so he is available.

He speaks very good English and he knows Bucharest like the palm of his hand. His driving skills are also top-notch, which is crucial in Bucharest.

The mountains: Mihnea is not an expert in the hiking thing (in fact, he doesn't hike at all), but I could recommend something:

1. Piatra Craiului mountains - pretty hard hiking, a 1-day tour means about 12-14 hours of spectacular hiking. The road is Bucharest - Predeal - Zarnesti - Plaiul Foii lodge. The lodge will be your "base camp" , price will be around - 20 EUR / night, OK conditions.

2. Bucegi mountains - moderate hiking, Road is Bucharest - Busteni - cable car to 2000 meters - then a 12 hour-hike: Cabana Omu (Omu lodge) - Cabana Poiana Izvoarelor - and then down to Busteni again.

All these destinations are at 150 km from Bucharest (Plaiul Foii and Busteni), si they are your best options. Each will take 1-2 days), I'll try to give you more details.

I never biked in the mountains, but those 2 options that I mentioned are too hard for bikes. I recommend hiking.

Another possibility would be Fagaras mountains. That would take 3-4 days, or Retezat mountains, in the north -west of Romania, also 3-4 days. Be prepared for some basic accomodation if you decide to spend the night in high altitude lodges, it is not "luxury" at all. Plaiul Foii is OK though.

Dixxjam,

Thanks for your help, again. If you're not busy, I'd like to invite you, your wife and Mihnea out for a meal...perhaps when I arrive on September 1st. No offence if you don't have the time or inclination, I'd just like to let you know that I appreciate your help.

Best,

john

I have avoided marriage so far, John. Do I sound married? :-). Anyway, Mihnea is happy cuz you didn't "marry" him. We are both single, and happy about it.

Don't worry about it, it's no bother, but sure, if I'll be around, we'll have some drinks (Gatorade or Redbull for you, I presume, judging by your website...). Great idea, btw. If I'm not mistaken, bikes are extremely popular in Switzerland, aren't they? I remember seeing on Discovery Channel a show about a Swiss Army regiment on bikes. I liked that. If that is what you do, organise those tours, then I sincerely envy you. I mean it certainly beats the 9 to 5 same ol' - same ol' that I am doing now.

We'll keep in touch, contact me or Mihnea if you have questions, We'll reply everytime we can.

P.S. if you will go for that extreme hiking I was telling you about, bring your usual mountain gear: sleeping bag, lantern, warm clothing, strong climbing boots, sniper rifle (just kidding on this one).
