Drive from Zagreb to Split - Food/Resturant Stops

Hello!

My boyfriend and I are traveling from Zagreb to Split in late may. We would like to stop en route for a meal but I can't any recommendations on line and have never been to the area. Does anyone have any recommendations for places to stop to eat along our route? It looks like its predominantly highway but there must be some smaller towns along the way with delicious food that would be worth stopping for?

Get off the motorway and drive via Ogulin and Slunj to have a luch at one of NP Plitvice Lakes restaurants listed here:

This one, for instance:

You were not going to drive on the motorway past the NP without stopping there, were you?

Thank you for the recommendation! I want to stop at Plitvice so so badly but I am afraid that we wont have time to explore since we have to be in Split by 7pm. Can you just stop here - it looks so beautiful but also like the type of place where you'd need to spend a day or so here and not only an hour!

What do you think?

Going to Plitvice means a getting of the highway, using 1 lane each way road for quite a while and adding significantly to your travel time. IMO it would be worth it only if you have at least a few hours to explore the park. Otherwise, just stop when you feel the need to stop at on of the rest stops or petrol stations. You could get off the highway and stop in on of the places such as Otocac or Gospic, which are not that far from the highway. Once you go through the Sveti Rok tunnel, there is really nothing worthwhile stopping at without making a big detour.

I found it worthwhile also just driving through Plitvice. licka kuca estaurant is close to the entrance no. 1 and the road passing through Plitvice - see the Google Maps:

When you continue by the road no. 1 (Udbina, Gracac, Knin), you will find more restaurants especially known for the lamb on a spin.

Konoba Pece in Vinjerac (close to Zadar) is supposed to excellent and has a lovely view. It wouldnt be too much of a detour I dont think...worth looking into anyway..

Just in case it is not clear the the OP, what Tarik is suggesting is the route without using the highway after Karlovac. The route via Plitvice and Knin is a bit shorter, but it takes about 45-60 minutes longer as the road is not as good as the highway. It is certainly a more scenic route and if you have time, I totally agree with that route. If you then have some time, stop in Knin for only a short time and visit the Fortress.

This route will take you well off the beaten track and through the highly contested territory during the recent bitter war and the war scars are still very obvious.

A short stop for even a coffee in Sinj would also be nice.

That road was actually the chief road, before motorway was built at the end of 1990s. Being a two lane road, it certainly does not allow for the same speeds like the motorway, but it compensates for that with much more scenic route

If you, for any reason, decide to stick to the highway all the way, the most scenic place to stop is Odmorište Krka, after the Skradin exit:

(In adition to the food photos, there are several photos of the great view from the observations platform.)

Hi there Ava R

I just wondering if you ended up doing the road trip and what route you took? We're looking to do the exact same on Friday and was hoping for some tips on what is really the best option.
