Venice to Zagreb Train Question
Save

I am checking the Trenitalia site. For the train departing Venice for Zagreb at 21:27, it appears that there is a change of trains, but it does not give the time of the second train, if there is one. Just the arrival time. Since there is a change of date on the second train, is there another stop or change of trains after we arrive in Zagreb? (I also do not want to get off at the wrong station.) It states:

Train No. Train Category

241 Venezia EN

Tratta Urbana non FS U

Also, I find this confusing. In one section it states:

Departure Station Arrival Station

Venezia (Tutte Le Stazioni) Zagreb Boronga

Another section titled "SERVICES PREFERENCES" it states:

Train EN 241 Venezia of 05/05/2008

from Venezia S. Lucia (21:27)

to Zagreb Gl. Kol. (04:18)

Train U Tratta urbana non FS of 06/05/2008

from Zagreb Gl. Kol (-:-) to

Zagreb Borongaj (-:-)

Last question regarding the train: There will be two of us sharing a three-bed compartment. I guess they do not have a two-bed compartment. They could put a stranger in our compartment? Unless we purchase the third bed.

Now that I have typed this I think I know what this all means, but I just want to make sure. Does it mean that our stop is Zagreb Gl. Kol. and whoever is booked to Zagreb Borongaj takes the next train? Also, the Venezia (Tutte Le Stazioni) station is the station before we get on at Venezia S. Lucia and the Zagreb Borongaj station is the stop after Zagreb, or the last stop?

Am I now understanding this correctly or am I thoroughly confused? If someone can sort this out for me I would be most grateful. Maybe I have everyone confused.

Thanks.

Hi Ellie,

things are very simple. This euronight train EN 241 runs from Venezia Santa Lucia station to Budapest Keleti station. It passes Slovenia and Croatia on its way.

This train is a direct train to Zagreb and you need no changing.

In Zagreb the main train station is named Glavni kolodvor (shortened to Gl. Kol. on Trenitalia site) and this is actually your station of disembarkment. Even if you'd like to go to Borongaj district, it would be better to take some other type of local transportation.

Tutte Le Stazioni == all the stations

There in Venice there are two stations. Santa Lucia station is in the real Venice in the lagoon. Mestre is a town on the "continent", nowadays a part of greater Venice.

I cannot find the text including "Tutte Le Stazioni", so I cannot comment to what it refers, sorry.

I'm afraid I cannot help you on a "bedroom" issue. I have no experiences with night trains.

Cheers,

Beni

Hi Beni,

Thanks ever so much for making everything so crystal clear. I just wanted to make sure that this was the information for the train starting at S. Lucia station and our getting off at the correct station in Zagreb, especially since we will be arriving at 4:18 in the morning. Since we will be going to Trieste first, and then taking the train to Venice, I was going to purchase the tickets in Trieste, but since you have clarified everything so well, we will purchase our tickets online.

I know you do not live in Italy, but I do have one further question, which you might be able to answer, and that is regarding Trieste. We will be arriving in Trieste May 1, which is a holiday. By any chance, would you know if the restaurants will be open or does everyone take off for the holiday? I am assuming all museums will be closed. If all museums will be closed, I guess it really will not matter, for we can just stroll around looking at the wonderful architecture and wander up and down the streets.

Again, thanks for your assistance and your time. It really is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ellie,

this is a difficult question. I cannot even tell you what's gonna be open in my own city on May 1st. It's quite a holiday, at least for me.

But I guess you won't be hungry. There should be food served at least in your hotel.

Most of the museums will be closed unfortunatelly, but some attractions are open:

try Miramare Castle

This is a site of the FVG information office: http://www.turismo.fvg.it/tol_2006/home.aspx?LANG=ing

Give them a call.

I also suggest to rise this question in the Italy-FVG forum.

Cheers,

Beni

I just took the Venice-Zagreb (night) train a week ago, and there was no necesary transfers in the middle of the road.

Departing from Venezia S Lucia it gets all the way to the Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor train station... the only thing i had to be carefull was not to miss the Zagreb Station because the train goes on, after leavin Zagreb, to Budapest.

Does anyone know if this train runs also in the opposite direction? I need to get from Zagreb to Venice in the middle of September and don't want to end up being thrown off the train in the middle of Slovenia!

Also if anyone knows a realistic description of how long the journey takes I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know - the websites seem a little contradictory on this...

Thank you!

Hello... two weaks ago i took the venezia zagreb train, and in two days ill be taking the zagreb venice train.... I have the train ticket in my hands so teorically speaking the zagreb venize train exists! jajjajaja

the trip is almost 8 hours!

You have to be very very carefull to have your papers in perfect order. There are many police chekings through the travel by the slovenian, and croatian police... so if you have your papers (passport and train ticket) in order you wont be thrown out of the train, otherwise you could end up in the middle of some remote slovenian place in the middle of the night.

Good luck with your trip...

Roberto

P.D. If something weird happens to me in my zagreb venice trip in two days ill let you know.

We have another question about this train from Venice to Zagreb. Does anyone know how often it arrives on time (at 04:18) and how often it is late? We have a flight leaving Zagreb airport at 06:30 and want to know if it is safe to arrive on this train the same day as our flight. (We'd rather not have a 26 hour layover in Zagreb.) Thanks!

Can someone please comment on the overnight train stops from Budapest to Venice. Because you cross non-EU borders do you have to open your door to show passports. is it possible to sleep through the night?
