Portugal or Croatia

I plan to post this in both forums. We are in the early stages of planning a trip for myself, huband (49 and 56), and two daughters (19 and 21). We can travel either the last two weeks of June, or the last two weeks of July. It has come down to these two new locales (or Maui, where we've visited several times), and I wish I could fill out a questionnaire, and have some travel expert guide me to my perfect vacation. Short of that, I would appreciate any advice from travelers here who have been to both places.

Some basic info: I like beautiful places, scenic views with a leisurely cup of coffee on my balcony. Bellagio, to me, was simply stunning, and one of the loveliest places I've ever been. I would like part of the trip to be at a hotel on a beach, though not required for the entire trip. I'm open to moving locations once during our 10-day trip, maybe twice, and staying "in town." I like charm and uniqueness - like Taormina, Eze, Positano and Venice. I like to cap off our days at a nice restaurant, with a cocktail or glass of wine. I enjoy some shopping and culture - not one for long days at museums or galleries, but guided tours here and there are nice - half-day trips to historical sites, etc. I like a place that invites strolling after dinner. I like some degree of liveliness, but not excessive drinking and partying. I like 4-5 star hotels with pretty grounds and public areas.

Thank you.

Well, this might be a bit of a problem, since both of these things you've listed can provide both Portugal and Croatia. I really think you should read a bit about both countries and decide for yourself so someone else doesn't make that decision for you. I really don't think you would be disappointed with any of those two countries and it just narrows down to some details. Price wise both of countries are pretty much on the same level, but I'd say that the you have more flights options from Illinois to Portugal than to Croatia. I can't tell you much for Portugal since I've been only in Lisbon, but check and read more on places like Rovinj, Trogir, Split, Dubrovnik, Šibenik, Cavtat, Poreč, Plitvice National Park and maybe Varaždin and Zagreb to get a better idea on what Croatia can offer you.

2. Re: Portugal or Croatia

We've taken organized two week tours of Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Portugal and Spain on separate tours and they have provided most of what you would like. Some dinners included most hotels 4 or 5 star, excellent local knowledge, no waiting in queues, free time in afternoon and evenings

Good luck!

Smaller historical towns in Croatia are: Hvar and Korcula. Korcula, Vela Spila - cave with ceramic artifacts dated to the late Upper Palaeolithic period. On the way to Korcula you can visit Peljesac. Ston with the largest stone wall in Europe. Than world's oldest' astrology board discovered in cave sealed for over 2,000 years in Nakovana. National park and christian monastery island Mljet. Beaches like in taormina Korcula island have plenty on south side of island across the italy called defora: Pupnatska luka, Rasohatica and Pavja luka. Sleeping inside old town walls of Korcula i will recommend Lesic Dimitri palace.

Talking about Positano. South Croatia has different architecture than north of croatia. Rovinj will be colored like positano.

About your 4/5 stars hotel wish: Booking.com search!
