Patrick - the BEST private guide in Bulgaria

If you are planning a trip to Bulgaria and would like to have a private guide and driver, I highly recommend Patrick - his website is http://www.guide-bg.com/

My husband and I were in Bulgaria for a week in August 2014 and I had pre-arranged with Patrick to be our guide and driver during that time. From the first email, he was wonderful. He responds quickly (I got an answer the next day!) and answers all questions and gives you an idea of all the tours/attractions that you can visit while in Bulgaria. You then work with Patrick to come up with the perfect itinerary for your trip. You can be a big part of the planning (I was - I sent him a list of places that I was hoping to visit and with his help narrowed down the list to fit into our time frame) or let him do all the planning for you. Patrick has many contacts throughout the country and is able to arrange special concerts, visits, meals, etc that you are not able to arrange yourself or with a big tour company. The reason is that these are friends that Patrick has made thru the years of being a guide and the special visits he is able to arrange are the highlights of the trip! I have traveled to many countries around the world and I am a big do-it-yourself believer - it takes a lot to impress me as far as a guide - Patrick did impress me again and again! My husband and I are already talking about another trip to Bulgaria with Patrick as our guide to visit some of the destinations that we were unable to visit the last trip and also expand the trip into other bordering countries with Patrick (yes, he does that also!) I know it sounds like I am gushing, and I am, but that is just how impressed and pleased I was with Patrick. Thru the emails we exchanged I felt that I already knew him (he even sent me a couple of pictures and a great email from one of his vacations because I had expressed an interest). When Patrick meets you at the airport, you almost immediately feel at ease because you have corresponded so many times that he already feels like someone you know. When we arrived at Sofia airport Patrick was just the guide that we were meeting, one week later when we left Ruse (with the private taxi that Patrick has arranged to take us to Bucharest to continue our vacation) he was our friend and it was difficult to say goodbye. Hugs were exchanged and Patrick implored us to contact him if we had an difficulties during the remainder of our trip (we still had 18more days in various countries in Eastern Europe). Part way thru the remainder of the trip we received an email from Patrick asking how we were doing and saying that he missed our smiling faces. What a nice note to get, especially being so far from home, it was nice to know that we had a friend who cared that was at least relatively nearby should we need him. As far as the guide experience, Patrick was very knowledgeable about all the destinations in Bulgaria that we visited. We learned so much from him and always in an interesting way. He was willing to share as much history as we wanted to hear but always stating that if he was talking too much or we were getting overloaded on the history to please let him know. He wanted our trip to be amazing and to our liking. I truly can recommend Patrick to anyone who would like a private guide in Bulgaria; I know you will be pleased.

If anyone has further questions, please feel free to send me a private message and I will be glad to answer your questions about Patrick and our fabulous time in Bulgaria.

Ok, Karrie11, that's all I was asking for - a little more information, thankyou, I withdraw my suspicions :) and It's not just because you are a new poster, it was for the multitude of reasons as explained above - chiefly no further information about the country itself whatsoever. If you check TripAdvisor for reviews yourself, then I'm sure you should appreciate the effort to keep those reviews genuine.

Anyway, welcome to the forums, they are not just here to provide information about your guide, feel free to tell us about your experience in Bulgaria, where you visited, stayed, where and you ate, etc, etc.

I am amazed at the accusations that poor "first poster" karrie11 is encountering. My husband and I and two friends traveled through Bulgaria with Patrick five years ago and our experience was identical to karrie11. He is a lovely, friendly, knowledgeable person. He is extremely flexible, which we value a lot, and his main concern is his clients' experiences. He loves to have a personal relationship with his clients and we have kept in touch with him since our trip. In fact, our travelling companions from our first trip are, at this moment, travelling with him again in Macedonia. As karrie11 points out, it's a shame that being "too good" raises suspicions. I recommend Patrick highly and unequivocally.

My husband and I also traveled with patrick. I will not repeat what the other posts have said but have to say our time with patrick provided us with insights into his country that I have never gotten from a generic tour of any country. You will love patrick and his love of bulgaria is infectious. You can believe the praise. It is well deserved.

And I am amazed that you think posts that exist with seemingly no purpose other than to promote a business and mention nothing about the experience in Bulgaria itself should be accepted without question, Linda S.

There is another Bulgarian forum that used to be popular, which now frequently and blatantly features fake reviews by its Irish owners of it's parent group. They even go to the extreme of locking the posts so that no-one else can comment on them, except for when they are leaving another fake review, and anyone who questions the behaviour has their account on the forum cancelled.

Unfortunately deception is a very frequent occurence on the internet, no disrespect is meant but I make no apologies for double checking to ascertain the validity of a post. That has now been done, and I extend my thanks to the original poster for reponding and I hope that draws a line under the matter.

Yes, we agree Patrick is a wonderful guide. We took a trip with him 3 years ago and are planning another through the Balkans in May. Did you only visit Bulgaria with Patrick? What were the dates you traveled with him? If you take ITN (International Travel News) we wrote an article highlighting our trip and it was selected as the feature article. Happy travels.

My husband and I travelled with Patrick during August 2014 and we had a wonderful time in Bulgaria! A lot of his great tours is already said so I will keep it short: We can highly recommend him regarding all aspects (he is sympathetic, knowledgeable, uncomplicated, a safe driver, etc..)! If you are looking for a private guide, Patrick is definitely a great choice!

Hello again Everyone. Thanks to Phil W for accepting my review of Patrick, no hard feelings - I was very pleased with his services and wanted to give him a really good review. To Swartz144, yes, we only traveled in Bulgaria with Patrick but listening to him talk about some of the surronding countries inspired us to travel with him again at some point and visit outside Bulgaria as well. We usually prefer to travel on our own, but having Patrick to drive was so nice! Usually my husband has to do all the driving so having Patrick was a nice relief to him as he could just sit back and enjoy the rides, scenery and the trip :-) I will definately check out your post in ITN as I would love to read about the other counties you visited. How nice that is was chosen as a feature article!!

As for more about our trip, after our week in Bulgaria, we rented a car in Romania and traveled for 8 days in that country, mainly in Transylvania. A beautiful country and quite different from the places we have been before. There are some small villages where life is like it was many years ago - bee keepers, shepperds out with their dogs moving their sheep flocks thru the fields, horse and carts piled high with hay harvested from the fields, gypsies collecting walnuts from the trees along the side of the rode to sell, tiny villages that you pass through with the women sitting outside on the porch selling potatoes from their fields or mushrooms picked in the mountains or baskets of red raspberries that are so ripe and delicious (we stopped a couple of times to buy berries as a snack to go with some crackers and cheese that I had picked up in one of the towns). We loved the Bransov area because you have all the restaurants etc. of a city but the day trips into the country are endless. From 1/2 to 3 hours away you can spend full days seeing the sites. Whether you want to experience country life in a tiny village or go to a popular tourist area or ski area, you are nearby from Brasov. A couple of our favorites were Rasnov Fortress, Fagaras Fortress and the Transfagarassan Highway that twists thru the mountains - do it from North to South...it is spectacular! About half way from the start of the Transfagarassan and Bucharest is the Poenari Fortress, which was Vlad the Impalers main fortress - its 1,480 steps up zigzagging thru a forested mountain but when you reach the top it is wide open and gorgeous. Well worth the climb! During this trip, we also went to Krakow, Poland, drove around Slovakia, drove down to Eger, Hungary and ended in Prague, Czech Republic. I'm at work and I could talk vacation all day long but I don't think the boss would like that much...lol....I will post again with the rest of my trip later. In the past I have read tripadvisor often when planning trips but this is the first time that I have detailed my trip - its fun!! Thanks guys for reading - I hope I'm not boring everyone.

My wife and I used Patrick's services a year ago last summer and were blown away by his attention to detail, his connections and his knowledge of the history, politics, geography and peoples of Bulgaria. I have recommended him to many people in the last 15 months. I would be happy to speak with anyone over the trip and our degree of satisfaction.

19. Re: Patrick - the BEST private guide in Bulgaria

I had the good fortune to be introduced to Patrick in Plovdiv. I am not normally one for hiring guides - I was travelling solo, and getting by fine by myself through Greece and Turkey. But meeting Patrick turned my week in Bulgaria into one of the best parts of my trip. Over a coffee he wrote me an itinerary for a week, with no expectation that it would involve him guiding me. In the end I did ask him to take me out for a day trip from Plovdiv, and I saw places I wouldn't otherwise have heard of (the Wonder Bridges, Asen's Fortress), let alone got to on my own. And travelling around with him was like travelling with a friend - relaxed, interesting, and good fun. He then put me in touch with another guide in the mountains, who took me for a day of hiking in the Central Balkan range that was nothing short of incredible (for hiking in that area, ask him to put you in touch with Martin - if he doesn't suggest it first!!). Following my departure for the northern part of Bulgaria, he made it clear that I could call him for help at any time. Super-organised, super friendly and approachable, full of suggestions, he's someone who goes beyond the call of duty in helping people discover and enjoy Bulgaria. Great guy, great guide.
