Dubrovnik to Sarajevo

We want to travel from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo and then from Sarajevo to Split via Mostar.

Is it possible to drive on your own? There appears to be a shorter route (3 1/2 hours from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo per Google Maps) - is that doable? Most others seem to go through Mostar.

Can anyone recommend any transfer companies as an alternative?

I have driven the M20 to Foca, it was fine. I have no reason to think the M18 is any different. It may help to use Google translate to get the Serbian version on place names you will pass through as much of the journey will be in Republika Srpska and some signs will be in Cyrillic. Using the route via Metkovic and Mostar is all in the Federation which uses Roman script.
