First time trip - recommendations

Planning on a holiday to Sarajevo in March/April next year from the UK.

How is the best way to get there?

Also any tips and recommendations to help plan a fantastic trip would be appreciated.

Thanks

Helen

The only direct flights to Bosnia are from London-Luton to Tuzla, some 120 km north of Sarajevo. https://www.tuzla-airport.ba/en/red-letenja/

From there there is a shuttle minibus.

Check the Google flights and http://www.azair.eu/ for most affordable ticket if you want to fly to Sarajevo - in most case it will be by the Austrian Airlines via Vienna, Croatia Airlines via Zagreb or Adria Airlines via Ljubljana. You can also fly to Zagreb or Split (Croatia Airlines, Ryanair, Easyjet), and then take the bus (rather picturesque ride). Don't ask about the trains - there are none, except inside Bosnia itself

Wizz Air, hungarian budget airline that keeps the line London Luton - Tuzla, has also other possibility: that you fly from London-Luton, Glasgow, Birmingham or Liverpool to BUDAPEST, and use their direct flight Budapest - Sarajevo

Tarik, the OP hasn't got much of a record of returning to threads she's asked for quite detailed information.

Well I gave it detailed - NO direct flights, so what are alternatives. As long as the British government does not lift the visas requirements for Bosnian passport holders visiting UK (and that will certainly not happen before May 2018), I don't believe there is any chance for direct flights - so any British tourist coming in this direction will have to look for other ways

British government obviously does not wish Bosnians to visit that country, nor strenghtening any friendly linkwith our country - so I hope our government will reciprocate by introducing visas for the British passport holders. And make it as complicated (and expensive!) to get them, as it is for us to get the British visas. Quid pro quo...

tarik.....Bosnia needs tourism. I don't think we'd have had our recent visit to Mostar and Sarajevo if we'd have had to apply for a visa.....we spent a lot of money too.

We purposely didn't spend all our Bosnian Marks, so that we have an excuse to return to Bosnia as soon as we can. So we can then spend more money in your economy and help to keep unemployment numbers down.

I think that most British that go abroad on holiday return home at the end of their scheduled visit, whereas unfortunately a lot of visitors to the UK simply overstay and disappear below the radar, hence the need for a visa to visit UK.....fair enough I think.

Visas were lifted for Bosnian passport holders already in 2011 for the Bosnian citizens for the whole EU borderless "Schengen Treaty" zone, so countries which are much more interesting for overstaying - Germany, Austria, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, and there were no problems with large numbers staying longer than permitted (90 days). Only UK decided to keep them... But British paranoia about being overrun by the continentals (Poles etc., which as Eu citizens DID have the right to settle and work there) lead to the Brexit at the end - and the consequences for British economy, including tourism, are yet to be seen. Sometime it is better being less an island...

PS i intentionally mention "Bosnian passport holders", because majority of Bosnian Croats have double passports - and with Croatian passport they can move freely inside the EU, including (still) Britain. And it were Bosnian Croats who, after Croatia joined the EU, left and still are leaving Bosnia in large numbers, moving to other EU countries for the economic reasons. So an "ordinary" Bosnian citizen, in majority Bosniaks and Bosnian Serbs who have just Bosnian passport, is not a problem - we would just wish to be able to come to the UK as tourists, in the same simple way as it used to be possible with Yugoslav passports prior to 1991.
