Tourist or transit visa?

If we plan on taking the bus or train from Vilnius then back to Vilnius one or two days later, is it enough with a transit visa, or do we need a tourist visa?

Also - if we do it offline, is it cheaper than the very high prices of doing it online?

Thanks!

Transit visa will not work since you are not going to a third country via Belarus.

You might use an online agency like RealRussia but now they all require hotel bookings via them and charge almost the same as local agencies in Belarus.

Ok, thanks. Was having a look and it is so expensive! We might be interested in only a day trip - lots of money for just a day visit. :/

The visa from the embassy directly is much cheaper - can I go that route and get a hotel or tourist agency to issue an invitation? How much are the invitations alone usually?

Invitations alone are not provided by the Belarus-registered travel agents in their right mind. Not since the scandal with the Swedish teddy-bears. So it is either a transit visa and you cross the country on the way, 1 night to stay at a hotel or a proper visit when you get rich or if you decide to attend the visa free 2014 Hockey Champ in Minsk prefering the latter to for the Brazil World Cup '14 or Sochi Olympics in Russia)
