Fiji - Prices & general Info.. Please!!

Hi Guys,

My partner and I are thinking about heading to Fiji for a week in November..

However we have heard that as lovely as it is, its quite expensive?!

Can any one elaborate on prices for accom, food, massage, transport etc?

We were thinking of doing one week in Phuket and another in Saigon, but Fiji in on our minds too!!

If anyone could give us a little info, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Pretty cheap for you aussies actually - your dollar is strong at the moment. Food in supermarkets is expensive if imported - fiji versions are cheap. Fruit markets cheap as. Alcohol is rather pricey - bring your own - we brought wine from NZ. Restaurant prices okay if they have close competition - out on the islands is expensive (though must have serious transport costs) but the islands are so worth it! We took breakfast and lunch stuff (from the supermarkets). Many shops are incredibly negotiable on price (like Thailand) - the markets in particular - eg we bought a bowl that started at $250 (was $130 in Jacks - a big souvenir place that will still offer you a smaller discount) for $80. Got our accommodation from Expedia - big discounts. Don't know much about Suva - we were in Nadi and on the islands.

Hi, we usually book our trips on travelnow.com which is similar to expedia. Have look at the islands such as Castaway, malolo, navini, mana, treasure, musket cove etc. Transfers are with a launch run by south sea cruises and depending on the time u arrive, u may have to stay overnight in Nadi. However if staying at Navini, they will pick u up any time. Some of these resorts offer meal plans too. Another idea is to bring alcohol with you as it'll probably be cheaper.

Our dollar is supposed to overtake the US dollar so Fiji will be very cheap. The Us dollar has been close to US$10 + $180 plus Fijian . If you are able to book direct with a resort you will reap this saving . Unfortunately it isn't reflected in the Travel Agents price as they don't reduce the price advertised in the brochures. Anything you buy over there will get the benefit though.

We're just back from a week in Fiji and I'm pretty sure that the accommodation costs were fairly approximate to what a week in Phuket cost us a couple of years ago. Expedia and zuji have some great Fiji deals for November. We stayed on the Coral Coast at Bedarra Beach Inn ($48 AUD per night via Zuji) and our transfer, meals and drinks totalled around $400 AUD - breakfast and dinners.

A day trip to one of the islands cost $89 AUD including transfers etc. We worked out our costings before we left based on what we wanted to do whilst there. Remember that your airfare will be cheaper to Fiji so what you save on that can go towards other costs.

Phuket will always be cheaper re incidentals like shopping (if you enjoy that) and massages etc but I think but it really boils down to what you want to do on your holiday. Asia and Fiji offer pretty different experiences. I enjoyed Phuket but found Fiji to be far more relaxed - no humbugging by touts, extremely friendly, warm locals and great cuisine that I won't find here in Melbourne.

Returned two weeks ago from a week at the Shangri La on the Coral Coast of Fiji and did a Phuket trip a couple of years ago ... they are two totally different types of holidays (in my opinion).

Fiji was very relaxing but we still managed to get out and about with a trip to Sigatoka town for supermarket/souvenier/hot bread/markets shopping and looking around but without any hassle from the people. A couple of day trips added in and a visit to a local village (not on the tourist strip) made it a great holiday. Prices were not cheap for food and drinks, especially in a resort.

Phuket (Patong Beach) was entirely different with lots more to see, more to buy, cheap massages, nightlife, etc. Every time you stepped out the door someone was asking you to buy a TShirt, handbag, have a massage. Although you can easily spend time relaxing in Phuket - the Fijian manner really slows things down.

If you do go to Phuket first you will be shocked at the prices in Fiji but will be able to unwind beautifully.
