The last price I saw here in Margarita Island was Bs.27.500 for an S4.

If you take current exchange rates that would be around US$688.

The same phone on Amazon unlocked is around US$600.

There are Apple & Samsung stores in the malls in Margarita but I would bet that prices will always be lower in the USA.

That, of course, makes no sense.

By the way it's mercado negro

When you said 688 usd are you using the mercado negro rate? ie around 40/1?

True / parallel value is like 25/1 correct?

Official government rate is like 7/1

Take a macbookpro for example at 1,600 usd. Could only get a deal if it was priced at the real world rate of 25/1 equaling around 40K Bs. Would only need 1,000 usd to buy.

Def not free but a slight discount IF its priced at the real world rate.

Listen, you will not find electronics here in Venezuela cheaper than Amazon.

The price I quoted using simple arithmetic is Bs.27.500 / US$688 = Bs.40.

If you only get Bs.35 then it would cost US$785.71

That is the rate you need to work with.

Not Bs.25 (have no idea where you got that number) & certainly not Bs.6,3 the official rate which is NOT available to visitors to Venezuela unless you try to withdraw cash from an ATM (in Bs. NOT $$) or pay for something with a credit card. Then you will be charged at the rate of Bs.6,3 for each $1.

As an example you buy something with a credit or debit card for Bs.1.000.

You will be charged Bs.1.000 / Bs.6,3 or US$158.73 + bank charges.

If you change some US$ in the black market you will get somewhere between Bs.35 & Bs.40 for each US$.

Pay for your Bs.1.000 purchase in cash & it will cost you the equivalent of around US$26.31, a difference of US$132.42.

Foreigners can not game the system although every now & then I come across one who seems to think they can.

Here's a link for MacBook Pro prices on Amazon:

Interesting, I thought I read there was a real world true value which is lower than the BM rate but higher than the Official rate.

Oh well, guess I wont be buying anything in Venezuela. Just enjoy meeting new people, seeing new places, and partying.

Cheers
