Robbed in Montevideo - me too...

I've been to Montevideo several times, for work and for pleasure. I have owned a small apartment there since 2005. Last week, I was walking with a work colleague (both of us female) towards a restaurant on San Jose street, a few blocks from the Plaza de Independencia in the "Centro," at 7pm on Sunday night. Three young guys in their 20s came put of nowehere and surrounded us. One pulled forcefully at my purse to break the strap (I was wearing it across my body) and ran away with it. The two other guys were probably going to take our two other bags (we had just come out of a day-long meeting), but I screamed and people came out of a grocery store, so they took off. It was completely unexpected and very disturbing. Went to the police station etc. but the police, while very kind, seem very understaffed and under-resourced. The cops told us crime is on the rise. Beware of the "Centro!" Take a taxi to go to dinner...

Until Montevideo takes meaningful action against its street thugs, this kind of trip report will become increasingly common.

In the meantime, tourism is bound to suffer big time and so will the reputation of a wonderful city.

Thanks for posting.

I'm really sorry to hear your story. I'm in Montevideo now, and my friends and family all tell me how theft and robberies have gotten really bad just in the past two years.

I carry a purse sometimes, but mostly I don't. I just carry money in my pockets and my ID card. Centro and Ciudad Vieja are not safe at night, or all day on weekends any more, except maybe two/three blocks of Sarandi on Saturday mornings.

Foreigners walking around with friends and family, speaking a foreign language, and carrying bags (even if they don't carry valuables) are a target for teenagers and twentysomething guys in the search for easy drug money. It's a real shame that the government doesn't increase police presence in tourist areas.

I appreciate your cautionary post, FGirard and yours, Expat. Based upon your experience, I will carry only what I must in downtown Montevideo, and not in a purse... I will be on Buenos Aires / Barcelona type caution !

I totally agree with Monte that the police must begin to take more responsibility for the safety of tourists and Uruguayans - there is a lot at stake, both for individuals and for the tourist industry.
