Colonia to Montevideo

Can anyone assist? I would like to take the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento. I would like to pick up a rental car upon arrival and then drive to Montevideo after a leisurely lunch in Colonia ds. Perhaps even go to a winery or so on the way to Montevideo. We would then return the rental car in Montevideo and take the ferry back. We have done this before, but not with a rental car - we took the bus last time. There are four of us.

Has anyone done this before? I'm assuming its possible. Will we have any trouble getting a car in Colonia DS?

Also, any suggestions for a route to Montevideo that allows us to see more of the countryside and maybe a winery or estancias?

Any suggestions for restaurants in Colonia?

1. Re: Colonia to Montevideo

To rent a car in Colonia and returning it in Montevideo is perfectly doable , you ´ve got several car rentals in Colonia

About the winnery visit,

option 1 - Take route 1 heading to montevideo, very close to Colonia (12km) you´ve got Bodega Bernardi, a small winnery well known for it grappas, no restaurant there but you can return to colonia or have a lunch at Casa del Sol Resaturant and continue to Montevideo but entering Nueva Helvecia for coffee and cake ( Don Juan near the main square), visit some cheese shops.

Route 21 - a must see , not developed yet as a wine route

option 2 - Take route 21 heading to Carmelo (40 km form Colonia) , arrange a visit in Los Cerros de San Juan, very old winnery , then return and take route 1 to montevideo

option3 - Take route 21 heading to Carmelo ( 1 hour from Colonia) arrange a visit in Bodega Irurtia, the largest vineyard in the country , wonderful cava. Then you go back by route 21 then turn in route 22 ( by Tarariras) and from there back to route 1 to montevideo

option 4- it takes more time, its like doing a small loop, not the first option if you only have one day, take route 1 then route 11 to Canelones and then route 5 . There you ´ve got to options for winnery visits Bodega Casa Filgueira , very close to the cross between route 11 and 5 , or in route 5 Bodega Joanico ( Don Pascual was one of the first award tannat , now there are several better wines, but the place is very nice and service very good)

Option 2,3 , 4 allows to see more countryside than option 1

At www.vinosuy.com you can find more information

If you want to visit an agritourism place add to option 2 or 3 a visit to Villa Celina in San pedro ( 20 minutes from Colonia) small farm but important milky producers and home made preserves

Milu,

Thank you again for your reply. We've read the information and decided that your second option would be the best to see Los Cerros de San Juan. It looks like we can make reservations via e-mail. Have you eaten there? Would it be a good place for lunch? We'll arrive at noon on the ferry.

How long will it take to get there from Colonia?

On another note, will detailed maps be available in Colonia? We're having trouble getting them in the U.S.

We'll be in Montevideo for 2 days - any recommendations for restaurants? We enjoyed our meals when we were there a couple of years ago, but are always interested in recommendations.

The website you recommended is under construction right now - but as soon as it is up, we'll check it out.

Thanks again!
