Inca Trail in reverse from MP to Wiñay Wayna?

The "The Machu Picchu Guidebook: A Self-Guided Tour" in the latest edition, suggests that it's possible to hike from MP past Intipuncu to Winay Wayna for about 2-3 hours.

Is this accurate/feasible in 2014 or will I be stopped at a checkpoint?

No, can't do it. Your guidebook desperately needs updating! Plus, there are no self-guided treks allowed, on any section of the trail. And any part of the Inca Trail requires the Inca Trail permit.

The Inca Trail has been pretty strictly regulated since 2004 (I believe that's the year) when it became apparent the trail was being overused and getting a lot of trash & damage.

Redhead is correct, you cannot trek to Winay Wayna from MP.

If you do the 2 day trek (one day walking), you pass Winay Wayna en-route to MP from KM 104.
