Machu Picchu in April - weather and tourist numbers

We are planning our Machu Picchu trip for next April.

We were originally going to stay overnight in AC then get the early morning bus to beat the crowds on 30 April. Due to other things we want to do in Sth America it would be better for us to be in AC and Machu Picchu on 12 April. The difference is only 19 days but will that make any difference to the weather and crowds? I have read that Machu Picchu is best in May so that is why we picked the end of our trip to go.

Thanks

Pam

Will still be the tail end of the wet season the first couple of weeks of April, take a coat and you'll be fine. Machu Picchu is always busy with tourists, so get up nice and early and head to the citadel as early as you can when there are not so many people there.

Hi Pam,

As Totally says, it is still the end of the rainy season. In all honesty, you can get rain and cloud at Machu Picchu at any time of the year.

Getting the earliest bus possible is the best advice, but there will probably be a queue, lots of people have the same idea, but once you are in the ruins, you can seek solitude easily, and avoid some of the groups that will be walking around.

I wouldn't make much hay betwix your date differences.

Have fun, enjoy!

Thanks for your info guys.

Hubby is paranoid about it raining early in April so we are looking at changing our plans which may mean more flights and higher airfare costs.

We went in April 2012. Don't worry about the weather! We had early morning rain and simply threw on raincoat poncho's until it cleared. We then got to Machu Picchu and it was shrouded in cloud. We sat down for a chat with some other travellers and half an hour later it cleared...for 5 breathtaking minutes! It was divine and I believe the cloud added to the mystery of it all! Just do it! You're gonna LOVE IT!

As Andean Trails said, the weather at Machu Picchu can essentially be a crap shoot; you could plan a visit in the middle of the dry season and still get rain on your visit to Machu Picchu.

Pick the date that works best for you and just be prepared with ponchos and/or umbrellas just in case.

I have accompanied several groups to Mapi in November, March, June & August. By far, the best weather was in August. Clear, dry & sunny all the days there.

Also been several times in March. And yes, the best thing to do when traveling in or near the rainy season is to pick your dates and go. With a poncho in your pack. Even recently, the rains came early in October this year. So hard to predict the weather.

Many people hustle up to be at the gate by 6 am. There is often a long wait. We would go up 45 min later and breeze right in.

I enjoy being there in late afternoon. Even up to closing because the mood is different.

Love, love, love that place!

We were in Peru April 2-17 in 2009; we had very little rain; and what we had was not long in duration. Daytime temps were comfortable; evenings cool to cold depending on elevation.
