3 wks in Peru - Independent or organised travel?????

My boyfriend and I are planning a three week trip

starting in Peru (Lima) and ending in Bolivia (La Paz) in June 09.

We are hoping to follow a rough itinerary :

Day 1 - 4 (Lima, Pisco, Balleastas Islands, Huacachina and Nazca)

Day 5 - 7 (Arequipa, Colca Canyon and Chivay)

Day 8 - 12 (Cuzco and 4 day Macchu Picchu trek)

Day 13 - 15 (Cuzco and Sacred Valley)

Day 16 Puno

Day 17 Uros

Day 18 Amatani and Taquille Islands

Day 19 La Paz

We also want to include a number of excursions such as sandboarding at Huacachina, flight over the Nazca lines, surf lessons/horse riding at Mancora and white water rafting at Cuzco.

Could anyone please let us know if this sort of trip would be feasible to do independently or would an organised group tour be more time/cost effective?

We are budget conscious and also prefer independet travel but want to make sure that we dont miss out on any experiences or discounts which may be available through a group trip.

If we do choose the independent option, we understand that its best to use a travel company for the macchu picchu trek. If any1 has a good recommendation, please let us know.

Many thanks

We used Peru Treks also, the perutreks.com one not .biz. We enjoyed it, food, equipment and guides all really good. I would recommend them to a friend, and would use them again if I ever had the chance to return to do the trek again. Their four day price is $450, and they take care of their porters. Make sure you check for information like that with operators, not all porters are treated well by the companies.

Also, we booked with a few companies, like Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca to spend the night, everything else we arranged on our own, it's very easy and we only speak very basic Spanish. We took book busses and flights on our own, hotels on our own and used local transport in the towns. Check with your hotels, many offer pickup service from bus or airport terminals for a good price.

You need to book the Trail pretty soon, not all the companies offer the start day everyday, so you'll need to find one that fits your schedule (or tailor your schedule to fit that date), you can check the calendar for how many spaces are still open total on the www.inca-trail.com.pe/ site and check the availability calendar listed on the left menu to see overall permits per day left, and also for local recommended tour companies look at andeantravelweb.com (in case you need to research other companies), they'll list which ones are good to their porters, which ones mostly spend the third night at Winay Wayna (closer to MP than the other alternative campsite, though it can't be guaranteed).
