What happens to the driver?

We'll be arriving at Cusco airport late morning. The hotel in Ollanta is sending a taxi to pick us up.

We had intended to stop at Chinchero along the way to Ollanta.

Here's my stupid question: We're going to want to have lunch along the way to Ollanta. What is the etiquette in this situation. Does the driver join us in the restaurant or would that be awkward? (we speak no Spanish.) Is it preferrable to ask him to wait while we eat? What is the normal thing to do?

I know that often tour operators have the driver's (and guide's)meals already included in their service charge when the service implies a lunch stop. Drivers usually do not eat with the passengers but guides may be asked to assist them with the language before they either sit somewhere else to eat or are invited by the passengers to join them.

If this taxi service is provided directly by the driver and if he already knows that there will be a lunch stop, I would believe he has estimated his lunch expense in the service charge.

Actually, its up to you.

If you want him to have lunch with you, go ahead. If not, just tell him to wait for you.

Its not your problem whatsoever.

While in Ollantaytambo, make sure to eat at Puka Rumi (right under KB Hostel). The atmosphere and service was GREAT and the soups and chicken saltado were amazing!

We spent two days with our driver doing day trips and invited him to lunch with us both days. He did not speak much english and we do not speak spanish but we enjoyed eating with him. Jorge was our driver set up by Rodrigo at the KR resort.
