Permits in Macchu Picchu?

I was reading a former entry and it said that all of the permits for Macchu Picchu are booked until August. Does that mean that you can not go to Macchu Picchu if you do not have a permit?-Laura

Laura,

Permits that are booked are for the trek on the Inca Trail. Most if not all of August is booked. It is only for the Inca Trail itself that there are these strict limitations (500 per day, booked in advance). But, Machu Picchu itself is available -- you take the train in from Cusco or SV, and buy your tickets for MP in Aguas Calientes, also your bus tickets to get up to MP -- or you can hike up, no permits required. You may need to make train reservations a few days in advance, esp. in high season (our summer).
