immunizations in the amazon

We plan to go to a Amazon lodge for 4days/3nights. Should we get any immunizationsbefore we leave, if so which ones? Should we take Malaria pills while we are there?

thank you!

You have to take a Yellow Fever vaccine 10 days before you go to the Amazon. I would also recommend Hep A&B.

I do not think Malaria pills are necessary but if you have any doubts, might as well use them.

I have worked in the Peruvian Amazon for years and never heard of a case of Malaria.

See the Peru Inside pages on vaccines.

Visit a travel immunization clinic. Your doctor can probably recommend one. There are many in the US and the nurse there can recommend everything you will need. As well as give you additional prescriptions, if wanted, for altitude (if you are travelling to other areas of Peru) and antibiotics in the case of severe travellers diarhea.

Also take a look at the websites for the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control.

We spent 4 days/3nights at an Amazon lodge and did not get any immunizations besides a Hepatitis A shot. We considered the Yellow Fever shot, but because we were only going to be in the area for 4 days, and we had about 6 bottles of DEET with us, we opted not to get the YF shot. Every day though, we'd spray our clothes and shoes with DEET and we had no problems with mosquitos.

As far as malaria, it's not endemic in the Peruvian part of the Amazon basin.
