cusco -lake titicaca -cusco

We will arrive in Cusco on jan 7th and leave on the 14th Of course we want to go to Machu Pichu and also Lake Titicaca .Is it better to go to Puno by train or is the return trip nicer .For that matter if we travel by train one way what is the best way to travel there / back ? .It seems that the train arrives after dark so that it may be better to fly up and train back .We plan to spend1 / 2 nights at the lake. Any advice would be welcome

Once you arrive to Puno, you can fly back to Lima, without having to go back to Cusco.

The Puno airport is in Juliaca which is not far away.

It's the same trip either way. We took the train (Andean Explorer) to Puno, and were picked up at the train station by a taxi sent by our hotel. It was just getting dark as we got into town, so we got to see a lot on the way. From Puno, we flew back to Lima (acutally, airport is in Juliaca, not Puno, 45 min drive). This was on our way back home. Either way, the train is a very long trip (10 hours).

If you only have a week in Peru, you might want to fly to & from Puno. If you are flying out, pay attention to flight schedules. The afternoon flights have been moved to earlier than previously, (latest flight 4:45 p.m., 45 min cab ride) so you can't do a full day's tour and then fly out. Note: the train only goes between Cusco & Puno 3 days a week, so you have to schedule accordingly.
