Arequipa-Puno Bus in November

Can't find a lot of info online and not many recent TA threads.

I definitely want to incorporate Arequipa into our 9-day trip to Peru. We are planning on flying into either Arequipa or Puno and then taking a bus between the two, whichever way we can work it out.

Is it rainy enough in November to delay the buses? I really don't want to embark on a bus journey longer than 6 hours. Also, on the Cruz del Sur website, I can't find a tourist bus, only a national bus option.

Are there any other transport companies traveling this route? TIA.

You could go take the 4m-express bus or Cruz del Sur from Puno to Chivay, stay one night in the Colca Valley and then go to Arequipa

It would be difficult to predict if there would be too much rain or not at the day you will be taking the bus to the Colca Valley.

I do not know your itinerary, but you could fly from Cusco to Juliaca in Puno, stay in Puno one night and then take the bus to the Colca and then to Arequipa and fly from Arequipa to Lima.

Hope this helps you!

@Falco. Thanks for your input. I was thinking we would not have time for the Colca Canyon, just Arequipa itself. I have 9 full travel days in Peru, arriving in Lima but traveling between Cuzco and Puno. I wanted to try to squeeze in Arequipa because I have read how beautiful it is. Perhaps the extra 2 days I have would be better spent in Lima or Cuzco if the rain would hinder the bus routes and cause possible delays??

Better to visit Arequipa first, it's much lower than Puno.

With a bit of luck you won't see much rain in November. Last year it didn't rain much in November.

4M Express have a two day tour of the Colca Canyon ending at Puno on the night of the second day.

Imo Puno isn't that amazing - at least less than the Colca Canyon & Arequipa - and it's literally & figuratively cold, you might as well skip Puno and share your time between Arequipa, Colca Canyon & Cusco.

An example of what you could do:

Day 1: Arriving @ Lima - Night bus/flight to AQP

Day 2: Visita Arequipa & browse Colca Canyon tour operators

Day 3: Colca Canyon, day 1. Sleeping in Chivay.

Day 4: Colca Canyon, return to AQP by 4 PM & night bus to Cusco > 8 PM

Day 5: Cusco city tour with the four ruins in the afternoon

Day 6: Sacred Valley and connection to Aguas Calientes

Day 7: Machu Picchu, return to Cusco at night

Day 8: South valley & Maras/Moras/Salineras

Day 9: Return to Lima

What a pity because the Colca Canyon area is very beautiful.

Extra nights would be better in Cusco IMO

If I had to do it again I would pick Arequipa and Colca Canyon over Arequipa and Puno. Sure Lake Titicaca was nice to visit and its nice to say Ive been there but Puno was nothing special at all. Colca Canyon and the little towns in it were amazing and it was expecially amazing to see the Condors flying literally a few meters away at some points.

Interesting. Thanks for your input.

How about the buses to the Colca Canyon in the rain?

(Day 0: Arriving @ Lima late-night)

Day 1: Lima-Arequipa flight; visit Arequipa & browse Colca Canyon tour operators

Day 2: Colca Canyon, Sleeping in Chivay.

Day 3: Return to Arequipia; bus/flight to Puno

Day 5: Lake Titicaca

Day 6: Puno-Cuzco flight

Day 7: Sacred Valley; overnight in Olly

Day 8: Machu Pichu; return to Cuzco

Day 9: Cuzco to Lima flight

(Day 10: Int'l flight to US)

Or is this too ambitious? My major concern is that if it does rain, there will be delays and we won't have enough time to do it all.

I think my travel companions are pretty well settled on Lake T., but we haven't booked anything yet. Thanks.

It looks doable, you can go from Chivay to Puno with 4m-express or Cruz del Sur.

Reserve the earliest flights to be on the safe side.

One last question, how rocky/bumpy is the ride up the Canyon? My traveling companions get motion sickness easily.

Don't you want to visit Cusco itself?

You both seem to know quite a good deal about Peru and planning a trip there. I am just starting out planning my trip for Nov 19-27. Last year I planned a trip for these dates to Belize and put the whole trip together myself by researching online before I went - which worked out great. This year its Peru - but Peru seems to be much more challenging. I prefer to plan a trip out myself, but I can see why a guided tour package might be better in a country that is more vast and has more history and ground to cover. Would you reccomend piecing a trip together or going with a package? Is it difficult to get around if you plan ahead? We don't have that much time so I would hate to get "stuck" Your suggested itinerary seems great as far as covering the major things we'd like to do. Maybe I'll just start researching how feasible it is to put this trip itinerary together. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
