Galapagos w/Easter Island?

Has anyone heard of a cruise/tour that includes time on Galapagos and Easter Island? Thought this might be doable but have not found any information as of yet? Is this something that would even work? We know nothing about travelling in and around South America. Any helpful reply would be great. Thank you.

All Galapagos cruises start and end in Galapagos so you need to start in either Quito or Guayaquil and fly to either Baltra or San Cristobal depending which cruise you are going on.

Normally the flight is arranged by the same agent as you book the cruise with since they like everyone on the same flight. They take you direct from the airport to the cruise and return you back to the airport.

Cruse ships around Galapagos go up to around 100 passengers - the large cruise liners are simply not allowed. Most boats are only around 16 passenger as thats the maximum passengers allowed per guide. I think this size gives the best experiance.

Someone asked this last week or so. Type in Galapagos Easter Island in the green search box above (either for the Ecuador or Galapagos forums) and it should come up. Sort by dates.

It was a short post. Logistics made it costly and complicated.

Fly to GI, return to Ecuador. Fly to Chile, then to EI.

Gi is almost 800 miles from Quito. As the crow flies, it's 2200 miles to Easter Island.

Sounds like this is not a great proposition so I appreciate the replies - would you belive that one company claims to do both GI and EI in one week? Crazy.

Dear Mommy,

I have heard of one tour that offers both, but as part of a larger 2 week globe trotting private jet type of $150,000 package. This is for the person who has money to burn, no time, and a desire to say "I've been there".

Warmest regards,

Thank you for the note - we looked at the Islander with NG but have tried for a few years, but they're also so full in advance that we never even have the chance to consider booking (we would need two rooms since we are a family - this always makes it tougher to reserve) - very frustrating - a lot of other people have time to plan trips a year in advance but unfortunately, due to work and family commitments, we are lucky when we get away at all and are often only a few months ahead (thank goodness for TA).

We wish we could get to Galapagos, but we either need to find another, similar vessel and experience, or we need a travel planner/agent we can trust for a quality experience.

Are there any similar quality cruises out there, with the quality of food, guide service and accommodations on a smaller vessel that are not booked so far in advance? From what we've read, the Islander looks the best. They definitely advertise the most and we are having trouble finding information on the other companies out there - ones that might be just as good.

Also it would be great if someone could recommend a travel agent who personalizes travel itineraries and packages and provides quality expertise. Someone who does more than just sell the canned trips billed online.

Any recommendations for either would be super .

And Heather your posts are filled with expert and authoritative knowledge - we would be happy to hear anything back from you too.

A worthy note is that we are interested in visiting (on separate trips): Macchu Picchu, Galapagos, as well as Easter Island, and perhaps even Iguazu Falls. We are selective with respect to accommodations due to some past experiences that did not go at all well for the family.

It DOES sound like you'd really benefit from working with a Galápagos specialist agency. There are a good number of really great boats working the seas around the Galápagos and it can be overwhelming to try to sort through them all--especially if you don't have a lot of lead time for your trip.

Three agencies that I can recall having consistently good reviews on this forum are Happy Gringo, CNH Tours, and Columbus Travel. If you type any of these in the search box, you'll get lots of comments. (Sort by date to see the most recent one first.) Any of these agencies will listen to what you are looking for and point you a variety of options. I've learned tons of information about the archipelago and the boats, from our first trip and through researching our return trip. But I didn't hesitate to contact an agency (I'm working with CNH Tours) to help me figure out the details. Heather's been a font of help as we moved through several glitches of boats we chose being sold or taken out of service.

Note, however, that boat itineraries are pretty much set in stone, barring some unforeseen act of Nature. So that part of your trip may strike you as a "canned trip." But that cannot be avoided, since all itineraries have to be approved by the National Park and can't be changed except in extreme circumstances.

You don't say when you're planning this trip, but I'll assume summer? You might consider one of the specialty family cruises offered by Ecoventura. These are excellent boats (I was on one of them without kids and got to talk to one of the guides on the family cruise).

How long do you have for this trip? It sounds quite ambitious and time-consuming, especially adding in Iguazu (which are spectacular).

Dear mommy-barby

If you have at least 2 weeks available for this vacation I think it can be done. If you first visit Galapagos and then on your return you flight to Lima, then you can take a flight from Lima to EI and have it all ready. I don't think it is a crazy idea I think it is definitely doable but you just have to get in touch with a travel expert that is willing to work with you in this package.

It is always a pleasure to help.

JV.
