How much time in Quito?

Next March we're taking a trip that includes 7 days in the Galapagos Islands, 3 days on the Amazon out of Coca, and 1 day in Quito.

We're thinking of coming in Quito a day early. But there doesn't seem to be a lot to do there. I also read that a town by the name of Otavalo is worthwhile.

Should we come in for an extra day or two?

Take a look at the Top Question on the right about all there is to see and do. There is a reason why Quito was the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a recent Cultural Capital of South America. You could stay quite busy for a whole week. After you read the TQ, narrow down your interests and we can advise you better.

We had four days before and 1 day after our Galapagos cruise for Quito and its environs, and still wished for more.

We just returned from Ecuador (miss it terribly already!!) and travelled from the train staion in Ibarra to Quito, via Otavalo, stopped briefly at the market. It has the typical South American souveniers, lots of alpaca stuff, weavings, ponchos, pan flutes, etc. It is a pretty small market, overall, at least compared to the ones we saw when we was in Peru last year, Pisac, for example. We did not explore the town at all, it was getting dark and we had to return to Quito. It is about a 1.5-2 hour drive from Quito, depending on traffic, north of Quito.
