It seem there is a whole marketing campaign runned by some people on these forum to advertise Guayaquil as a touristic point not to be missed.

Quito's airport was designed to be a great terminal back on the 1950's when it was build, even the surrounding area was completly empty back then, as time passed this area got populated, new houses and neighborhood were build, now days is almost on the downtown area of Quito's city, unfortunately the lack of action on building the new airport by previous administration took this beautiful city not to have an standard airport on today's technology, finally they decided to build it, but the opening's date for this new airport had been postpone and it was changed twice, they are runing two years late, behind the schedule, now the new opening date will be hopefully, on December 2.012 if we keep our fingers cross, otherwise will be December 2.013 and so on.....

Guayaquil, on the other hand, took action and build a brand new International airport in less time and it was opened on July 2006 fully functional, on the last three years had even won three consecutive awards for best airport, best customer service and best terminal building by world wide airports which was voted on by thousand of passengers that passed by through this airport.

Didn't want to read everything... but, I do agree with Dennis Yepez... One of the reasons taxes are higer in Quito than in Guayaquil is the company running these 2 airports... one wants to charge more than the other... Guayaquil doesn't have a new airport, is just the terminal; that is the same thing that happened in Quito, they restored the old terminal.

One thing to clarify, not all international departing (or arrival) flights go through Guayaquil; there are some that are direct. This has to see more with operations of each flight...

And yes... people paying for the new airport just outside Quito are the users... not just taxes on the airfare, but also parking prices, they are ridiculous!

To the best of my knowledge airport tax in UIO is $40.80, GYE is $29.78. Quito is about $ 10 higher. Rates from the mainland to GPS seem to be about US $20.00 lower out of GYE... we are talking about $30.00 difference.

Guayaquil built a new terminal not a new airport. Fares internationally seem to be comparable.

While all travelers are different when it comes to their interests, I would not skip Quito on a visit to Ecuador because of a $30.00 dollar difference, Quito is a fascinating destination. This said, nothing wrong with GYE as a stopover on the way to the Galapagos...

6. Re: Why Guayaquil's airport is so cheaper than Quito's airport?

On our way to the beautiful Galapagos Islands, on equador. We had a bad experience trying to land at Quito's airport, after taking off from Miami's International, about 3 and half hours later, the crew members prepared us for landing, it was night time. So we started our descend into the final approach on Quito's airport, but after a while we realized that we were circling over and over again, without any success, we could even heard the extra noise that comes when the plane lowered the landing gear.

Then, the captain informed us, due to the foggy weather conditions at Quito's airport we did not have the minimum visibility required for a safety landing, therefore it was way too hazardous to wait for the weather to clear up because we were flying over the Andes mountains, and it was turbulence on the way, for a nearby storm heading into our way, so we were detoured to the alternative airport that Quito has, which is Guayaquil.

After an smooth landing at Guayaquil's airport, we were welcomed from the the airlines's staff members on the ground, who explained us that we will continue on our fly, the next day. We were scare to miss our conection to the domestic flight to the Galapagos's islands scheduled at 9:45 am via Aerogal #938 (Galapagos Airlines).

The following morning we found out, that we had to go to Quito to catch our flight to the Galapagos, that was going to bring us back to Guayaquil again, so we asked to the airline's manager, if we could wait at Guayaquil's intead of keep on ggoing with our international flight back to Quito, then go back to Guayaquil again and then to the galapagos, it did not make any sense at all, to go back and forth, and finally ended up on the same place we started, luckily for us, the customer service from Aerogal agreed to our request and they call the Quito's office and all our boarding passes were transfered back to Guayaquil and we continued our flight to the Islands.

The service, information and hotel we stayed at Guayaquil were wonderful, I do not have any complain whatsoever, just agree to share you my experience because Mr. Joseph that inquires about the expenses of Quito's over Guayaquil is absolutly right, you flight to Quito then all the domestics flights into the islands do stop at Guayaquil, and yes, you do pay more, for nothing. Please inquiry your travel agent before booking. We don't know if Guayaquil build a terminal or an airport but what we saw was a very nice airport with all their service working, when we finally got into Quito after our Galapagos cruise ended, Quito's airport looked like an old factory place, I was expecting something similar from what we saw at Guayaquil, but we were very dissapointed.

7. Re: Why Guayaquil's airport is so cheaper than Quito's airport?

We found very interesting to read about this subject because, we as visitors use both airport's facilities, this is not only about saving USD/. 30 Mr. Crewtips this is about we are overpaying for a service that we are NOT getting at Quito's airport.

We went to picked up a friends of ours at this airport, we rented a Van. When we finally got there through the heavy traffic this city has, we found out that our friend's flight was delayed, two hours later they finally landed. Later on, they told us they were in Guayaquil's airport waiting for the weather to clear up, before attempting any landing. On our way out of this airport, we found out that we had to pay for the Parking Ticket almost USD/. 20 (Twenty dollars) we thought it was some kind of mistake, but there was not mistake, we tried to complain, but it was worthless, they did not care, they even told us that was the parking fare and that's it, there was nothing they could do.

So as you can see, there is not only 30USD, in my case was much more than that, then you need to add all the time that you spend there sitting around, because there is nothing to do. We are not the only ones saying this, let's hear from Canadians who happened to live in Ecuador, what they have to say about this disturbing subject, they made a review of every single airport on the nations, and Guess what? Even Cuenca's airport seems to be so much better than Quito's according to their knowledge, too bad is only a domestic airport, here is their review:

Quito's airport::

gringosabroad.com/whats-the-quito-airport-li…

Guayaquil's airport::

gringosabroad.com/whats-the-guayaquil-airpor…

Cuenca's airport::

gringosabroad.com/whats-the-cuenca-airport-l…

See what I mean, thanks so much for your attention. I am really hoping they really improve their service, is for their best interest. If the city made a bad deal with Quiport, why do we as usuers have to pay for it? Is not fair...I will stay with Guayaquil's airport next time, that is for sure, after all that experience.

EC is right. All of a sudden there are numerous comments about Guayaquil vs. Quito, the difference in respective airport taxes, and, at least on this thread, comments from members who never bothered posting on TA until this non-issue appeared. And how strange they all have similar grammatical errors.

Crewtips' post points out the paltry difference between airport taxes. Frankly, anyone who would forgo the wonders of Quito--the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Site--to save $10 should probably just stay home.

And, for those of you in the U.S., when I fly home, or to your city, I'm gouged with tons of taxes for rental cars and hotels to pay for your ball fields and...airports!

Mrs. Azbuceadora, one quick question on your review:

How can you even compared any US airport with Quito? There is not even comparison between the reliable service you get here in the US, with an small airport in equador, that does not offer any reliable service for its passengers, not even a customer service office to be heard. Nothing..!!

On the other hand, to be honest with you, if you would had been be making the same comparison between any US airport and Guayaquil, I would had to agreed, even this airport is on a third world country like equador, all the service this airport has, belongs to any develope country, it can easily pass for any US or european airport. How did they do it? I really do not know, but one thing is for sure, it is working, with half prices than Quito. It is certainly doing a great job.

I really do not understand if we are talking about the same country here, how's come you guys criticized so much? Instead of being proud as ecuadoreans, that finally Guayaquil is doing the job, you guys waited for so long, on Quito's case would still be a long wait for another year and a half or so.

Please, do not dare to make a comparison between the five stars service you get here in the US with quito's old airport there is no way, those two places do not have anything in common to be compared of.
