Furnished apartments in Vina?

My husband, baby, and I are moving to Vina for work in 2 weeks and are trying to find a furnished apartment to rent for a month or two to see if we'd like to live longer in Chile (Argentina is our fallback plan.) We want to find something safe, simple, and centrally located that is also furnished and reasonably priced. From what I've gathered from others, we should be able to find a nice furnished apartment for 260,000 - 400,000 a month (I'd prefer the lower end of the range!), but I'm not having much luck...

This seems to be an impossible task to do from afar, so I'd appreciate any tips from other expats around good agencies to work with, websites to visit, etc to find a place for my family.

Do not arrange or pay for anything from afar. The fundamental rule is to always see the place (and the area it is in) before agreeing and paying. Also, many places aren't advertised on the net and are best discovered by literally walking around, looking at the posted ads at the local supermarkets and asking the conserge or administrator at promising looking condo complexes.

Use the online ads to get an idea of prices and for contacts when you arrive. Remember that an agent will charge a commission and represents the owner not the renter.

So plan on working out of regular traveler oriented lodgings at first till you find what you are looking for.

A good resource for current and future expats to Chile is the forum at allchile.net.

Your research is correct in prices,

You will be able to find nice apartments in Viña for around USD 500 -700 a month but only of you plan to come from March to December.

During January and February it is high season and the prices rise up to 3 times for the same places as the owners get better prices for daily rents.

My advice: plan to stay at a low cost hotel for a week or so and from there always check the apartments. With a child, remember safety and look for apartments with playing common spaces.

Please be careful with too recently painted places, check for orientation and remember in the southern hemisphere the best is an orientation to the north.

I agree with www.portalinmobiliario.com as a good option to find what you need.

You will love Viña, it's a lovely place to live.

Good luck and kind regards from Valparaíso and Viña del Mar,

Thank you all for your recommendations and feedback. We are just wrapping up our 4 month stay in Vina del Mar, and I wanted to provide an update on how we ended up finding a place to stay for anyone else who may be looking for short-term furnished rentals in Vina del Mar.

We booked a place to stay for the first month online (US $550 with WiFi but gas was extra) , and once we had this home base we found a more economical and centrally located place to stay in for the remainder of our visit. The place we rented from August into November was a 1 bedroom a few steps from the ocean and a block from the casino. It rented for CL $180,000, which is approx $360 - $400 US a month (depending on exchange rates, etc.) This didn't include internet, electricity, gas, or building fees, but ended up being a pretty economical way to go.

We found the apartment the old fashioned way, by reading the classifieds in Valpo's El Mercurio and making phone calls, and rented from an agency in Valparaiso. Our imperfect Spanish and confusion with the Chilean accent non-withstanding, we found a furnished short-term rental in a great location. The prices for the other properties we looked at were generally a bit higher, around $350,000 - $380,000 but they were often for a 2BR and had everything included (but no internet.) I hope this is helpful to someone down the road, and gives travellers a sense for the great deals still out there if you're willing to do the foot work.
