Santiago Airport International Departure Tax

Is it true that one has to pay a 30USD departure tax when leaving Santiago to fly to Bariloche and that this tax is payable at the airport separate to the plane ticket?

If so, where do you make the payment and are credit card payments acceptable ?

There is an international departure tax. Normally this is included in the price of the ticket.

Thanks Toid, just checking as the information I had received from two different agents (from the same airline) was contradictory.

You can pay with cash or by credit card. There are signs just before immigration directing you to the desks where the reciprocity fee is paid.

We arrived in Puerto Montt, CL from Bariloche, AR via bus and paid no reciprocity/visa fee - that $100.US pp is charged only if arriving by air w/ a US PP.

Also, departing SCL on AeroMexico to MEX on 4 Nov., we paid no departure tax as that was included in our ticket tax (used DAL miles).

We paid the reciprocal fee of $100 US per person this time because our passports had expired. We paid by Master Card. No departure tax, though.

Toid and mikemo are correct in that this tax is usually already priced in and paid for when you buy your ticket.

One exception I've seen and heard from others is when someone is on a RTW ticket. The airline will indeed stop you at the boarding gate and make you pay this tax if you get that far without it being collected (seen this happen to other passengers on Lan).

Round the world

You pay just before immigration at the bottom of the escalator. I saw several people that stood in line in immigration, only to have to go back and pay the reciprocal fee. Both lines were very long because we arrived at the same time as another plane.

There were a couple of employees at the foot of the escalator when we first arrived that were trying to notify everyone as they came down to make sure they knew about the fee. Some people, however, managed to slip past.

Oh the grumbling by the Americans! Chile, IMO, should post an explanation of the fee so everyone will realize we are paying what the US charges Chileans for visas to the US. Many felt like Chile was just taking advantage of tourists. One woman said, "I guess they (Chile) can charge us what they want to."
