Chile - Entrance Fee?

Hi all,

Someone told me that you have to pay a $100 entrance fee to get into Chile from the U.S. - is this correct? i haven't read a thing about this in the travel guides i have purchased.

Thanks much!

Yes, that's right. You have to pay it before you can go through customs. Our stamp is running out this year because our passports expire this year so we will paying it when we come in November. It is called a reciprocal fee. They also require cash, at least they did when we paid it the first time. It was an unpleasant surprise when we got off the plane. No one warned us beforehand.

Here is a past thread explaining the fee and why US citizens have to pay it.

The US$100 fee is charged US citizens to enter Chile because the US charges Chileans US$100 to apply for a visa. For Chileans it has to be paid whether they are granted a visa or not. The fee can now be paid with a credit card.

However, FWIK, entering Chile from a land crossing does not require the $100 fee. Nor does a visitor holding a European passport...even if they are flying in from the US.

How about Australian citizens? I read where we pay $USD34 - is this correct and good for more than one entry? I will be arriving in Chile twice on my trip - by air (Santiago) and by sea (Valparaiso)

many thanks

Julie

Yes, Australians pay too. The payment is good for the life of the passport and only charged when you enter by air.

Hi,

I'm also new to this. I have a couple of questions about this topic. Does the entrance fee apply to children also? We are planning on travelling to Chile in December and are travelling with a 15 and 8 year old. Also, why is it more for Canadians? Will this charge change without notice(prices raised) once we get to the airport?

Thanks!
