Where to stay in Santiago?

My husband and I are planning on spending about 3 nights in Santiago at the end of April. What neighborhoods are best to stay in so that we can walk or take public transportation to many attractions, and also safe? Also, is it better to take public transportation or taxis from the airport to the hotel or hostel?

We stayed at Meridiano Sur Petit Hotel, a very cute boutique hotel in Providencia. It was very beautifully decorated, offers a nice buffet-style breakfast in the morning, nice garden/patio area, and is safe (gated--you are buzzed in by the person at the front desk, who is there 24 hours). It was very comfortable--had digital cable, big bed and en suite bathroom. We really liked it.

As far as neighborhoods, we really liked the Bellavista neighborhood. Lots of good restaurants there and would be great for going out for drinks in the evening. Providencia didn't have many restaurants that we liked, though right down the street from our hotel was a Peruvian-Japanese fusion restaurant that was out of this world.
