The ATM will dispense the currency of the country, the Chilean peso. It is never a good idea to carry large amounts of any currency in cash with you when travelling. It is safer to use a combination of ATM and some cash. Do not exchange dollars at the airport as you will get better rates elsewhere.

Even if you did (won't happen) get US dollars from a machine, they would not be too useful for most purchases in Chile.

What is your intent? The IVA exclusion for higher end lodging?

Are you aware that the Chilean Peso is considered to be stronger than the USD?

If you DO find an ATM that spits out US$, if it's anything like the ones in the touristy parts of Mexico, you'll get whalloped with a ludicrously bad exchange rate. The system converts dollars to local currency, and back again, and you pay dearly for that.

Just use pesos.

USD can be useful as u can pay hotel and day trips (preferred currency by some chilean agencies)... taxi drivers gladly accept dollars too..

u can also pay by credit cards at most places...

You follow that advice at your own risk.

To sum up:

---- SOME travel agencies and services particularly the ones that cater to North American tourists will accept USD.

---- USD cash or foreign credit card can be used at registered lodging to exempt you from the 19% value added tax. Be careful that the 19% exemption is not exceeded by a possibly very bad exchange rate by the lodging establishment.

---- USD is not used much outside the catered to North America tourist sector and even if accepted, the exchange rate will be very very bad.

---- The reciprocity fee is charged in USD.

--- All who accept USD as payment will require them to be in pristine condition and sometimes good bills may be denied if they are a certain series due to counterfeit concerns.
