Post cruise stay

Hi - new to this forum so rather than check out all the post thought I would just ask my own questions

We are staying in Santiago for 3 nights post cruise in Jan 09 - what should we be doing for these days - what should we not miss? We have a city tour included - this a good idea or is there something better we should be doing with our time? What about food - we are two couples one mid 40s one late 50s - where can anyone recommend eating - what type of food should we expect?

Any help gratefully received.

Santiago is a big city. There is lots to do. It totally depends on your interests. There are lots of city tours, but take one of the new double deckers. A tour give an introduction to the city. You should walk the centre.

You could add in a winery tour. There are easily accessible wineries - Concha y Toro and Cousiño Macul. There are lots of museums and art galleries - the Precolombino is perhaps the best. Go up San Cristobal hill for the view.

You can get any kind of food in Santiago just as in any large cosmopolitan city. There are good steak houses, peruvian, chinese, japanese, indian, korean, arab, italian, spanish, french and german restaurants. Do try the sea food - there are a number places in the Mercado Central.

Mercado Central is not an entirely safe area. Watch out for pickpockets.

There you'll find mostly sea food, and chilean food. (restaurants aren't too sophisticated in that area...)

A good restaurant guide (in spanish) is:

It depends on what your mood is, or what your intention is regarding the quality (and prices) of restaurants.

A good and nice choice would be to go to the Boulevard del Parque Arauco shopping centre. There you'll find a lot of different restaurants, in a safe and nice place, maybe too american in style... but if you visit Parque Arauco, maybe you can stop by to eat at the Boulevard (not the Food Court please!)

Borderio http://www.borderio.cl/, would be another alternative.

More expensive than P.Arauco, and farther... taxi is required.

Concerning a city tour, I advice you to take one. I don't know how is the one that's included on your trip... but a new company has started to operate with nice buses. Check them out!
