Driving from Temuco to Puerto Varas

We are planning a trip in March and instead of flying from Santiago to Puerto Montt for Puerto Varas, we are thinking of flying to Temuco and then renting a car. Questions are:

Can one hire in one place and leave the car in another? 4x4 needed?

How far is it in hours and has anyone a recommendation for somewhere to stay on the road?

Is it a scenic drive and worth doing or should we just fly and spend the extra time on Chiloe instead?

Any suggestions or advice welcomed! Thanks

There is a 6 lane highway between Temuco and Puerto Montt, so you definitely don't need a 4X4. A one way drop off is possible with some car rental companies but it can be expensive. Best to contact a few and ask. It should take about 4 to 4.5 hours. There wouldn't be any point in stopping for a night on the road, but you might wish to get off the highway to visit different towns and spend a night in one or another.
